Sometimes being "friends with benefits" isn't so bad. However, stop and think about why you cheated on him in the first place. Also, remember that time changes people. In my opinion, he has never gotten completely over you. Especially since in 8 years he's only had 1 girlfriend. Talk to him about it and possibly do a "trial run". Give yourself what you consider a reasonable amount of time to change your mind if you decide that it won't work again. Also, be smart about this and do not factor in that he is the father of your child. If it becomes a bad situation, your child will not benefit.

it will be hard to try to live together because of your past. It sounds more like friends with benefits whom have a great understanding of each other. The best thing you can do is put everything on the table with him and open the communication avenue.

examine why you cheated on one another. Has either one of you changed in anyway? If your are the same at the core then you are just lonely and need to try to avoid the comfort of a stale relationship. It is easy but the same problems with just resurface.

Of course you should try again After 16 years you have too much history not to.

If you are both willing and for the sake of your child, why not give it another go, but whichever way it's good that you have remained friends.

Life is for going forward not backwards. I advise you to remain as you are or even better forget him altogether. Good luck.
