If you're an American citizen, currently, you won't need a passport, but it's helpful. If you don't have one, have a copy of your birth certificate and your driver's licence. If you have any additional Gov't photo ID, best to bring it as well, just in case.
As for the pooch. If he/she's over 3 months old, it'll need a vet's rabies vaccination certificate and must be your own pet and not to be imported for sale. That's it. Contrary to what someone here posted, there is no quarantine if you have that rabies certificate and the pooch is in visually good health (not half dead).
I'll post a link from our customs for you as this has been asked before.
For the pooch: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/i...
For you: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1...
and for you to get some of the tax you pay on purchases here refunded back to you: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/visitors...

Yes, you will need their vet records with all their shots (rabies, parvo, coronavirus, and bordetella) up to date and a paper signed by the vet saying they have been checked over and are in good health. Make sure the dogs are wearing all necessary tags and ID, and that they are licensed in the city you are living in. Do not attempt to bring in a pitbull as they are banned in some provinces in Canada. You yourself should have a passport, although it is not yet mandatory, it will make life alot easier. If you cannot bring a passport bring your birth certificate and valid driver's license. Have fun in Canada!!

I have a cousin that lives in NJ and travels north to Ontario, Canada fairly regularly. He will sometimes bring his dogs with his family. I think all they do is make sure they have all the dogs paperwork up to date (ie. shots, licenses, etc.)

Yes, you are allowed to do it. Depending on how long you will be staying here, if you have the proper funding, they should let you through the border with no problems at all.

Yes it is possible. Always bring your passport!! Your dog may have to go in quarantine for a few days though. Try phoning the boarder...find out what crossong and phone them as each crossing, I find is different in what they allow!
Good luck and welcome to our find land.
