Can my company require me to take my company car in for maintenance during my off time without pay?

They also deduct money each check for personal use even though I NEVER use it for personal reasons. I store this vehicle at home when I am not working.

Do you remember those pieces of paper you signed when you started your job? There was one called a job description in there. Somewhere in the fine print there was a clause that said "other job related duties". I am afraid this is one of them, my friend. Nothing you can do about them sticking you with dropping off the car. Now, lets talk about your taxes. Do you turn in your mileage? Do you get paid for it? Do you turn in gas tickets? Who pays for the gas? You or them? You have already said they are paying for maintenance, so scratch compensation for that, and it appears you are seeking some type of compensation for the inconvenience of having to take the car to the shop. Are you allowed to use it for personal reasons? You have several avenues you can follow here. If you are paying for the gas and the personal money taken out of your check goes for the upkeep on this car you are looking at a valid tax deduction. I'd consider itemizing my taxes next year. If you eat on the road, make a quickie stop at WalMart for office supplies, whatever, save those tickets too. I know it's a hassle, but it can save you big bucks come time to deal with Uncle Sam. If you aren't sure what the company policy is regarding personal use of the car is, find out. If you can opt out of the personal use plan do so, but realize that when you do, you may only be insured to drive it during business hours. If an emergency EVER came up, and something happened you would be responsible for reimbursement to your company if something happened to the car. They also may want you to park the car at the office every day instead of storing it at home. Decide what is more convenient for you. Another option is to start using your own personal vehicle for business use, and forget the company car, and all of it's benefits. Then you don't have to answer to anyone vehicle wise. You get all of the tax breaks, you keep up the maintenance, you get the wear and tear on your engine and tires, and you don't have to worry about being taken advantage of, or giving away your time. Hope this helps. Cheers~

Use the car for personal use it will save your own vehicle. As long as they are paying for the maintenance just drop the vehicle off and have it serviced. It isn't an everyday thing but just a couple of times a year. You should be glad that you have a company car and don't have to worry about using your own like the pizza delivery, or was it DiGiorgno?

It depends on whether you are a salaried employee or hourly employee. Salaried employees are essentially "owned" and you have no off-time. If you are hourly, the answer is that they cannot require you to take their car for maintenance without pay. As for the personal use deductions, you need to document all miles and their business purpose. Turn those in to the company and demand a refund.
