That's really a subjective and highly debated topic. New codecs come out from all the creators in generations and they're usually all very competitive. In fact, when some tests are done to compare the latest codecs from Real, Microsoft, QuickTime, and Flash - the outcome is usually that some codecs are better at certain things while others are better at other things.
