How to get the stink off our dog?

Our black lab really smells bad no matter how many baths we give him. We have used several different "shampoos" and nothing has seemed to work. Any ideas?

Update:

He is an outside dog, a male, he isn't rolling in anything, we have used dog shampoo.

If you are bathing your lab regularly and he still has a bad odor, he may have other health issues going on. Labs and most dogs with the floppy ears have chronic ear problems, such as yeast infections. After bathing, water tends to get trapped in the ear canal, which is L-shaped. This trapped water provides the environment needed for bacteria and yeast to flourish. Look in his ears and see if the smell is coming from there, and look for any signs of irritation such as redness. These ear problems can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics if it is caught fairly early. I would make an appointment to see your vet.

Well, is he an outside dog? Has he got into something that's making him smell bad? Need more details to be able to help you out!!

Are you using a cheap dog shampoo, human shampoo?? What have you already tried??

  • Maybe you need something to break down the natural oils that are in his/her fur. I bought shampoo for our dog that immediately gave her a rash. No matter how many times I bathed her, she continued to scratch. I finally bathed her in a solution of baking soda and warm water, and then a shampoo designed to remove build-up. This was able to break through the oil in her coat and wash away the remainder of the bad shampoo. It could be that the oil in your dog's coat is not allowing you to break through to the "stink".

Spray your dog down with Windex; it will take care of the stink and any acne! No, no, I’m just joking; do not spray your dog Windex. The Listerine idea sounded good, but wouldn’t the alcohol dry out thier skin?

Did he get sprayed by a skunk? If so, that smell will have to wear off. I would call a vet and see what they say. It may be something he is eating???

You could try some deodorizers or colognes for pets. I have seen them in the Pets section at Walmart. You could also try Petsmart or a pet store. If no luck, ask your vet.
