    According to Wikipedia, Portugal was the first European power to explore the coast of West Africa, developing their own settlements beginning in 1445. The French and English came after the Portuguese, and the slave trade there soon began.

    I'm guessing Henry the Navigator of Portugal. Some European power could have gotten there before 1414 but I don't know of any extant documentation. So, I'll say
