Hi mate!
The lonely planet guide it´s the way to go, but be sure to check out this website:
www.couchsurfing.com
it´s an international comunity of travelers, where people like me offers their houses, a bed to sleep, even a place to put your tent, or a cup of coffee to fellow travelers... i backpacked through europe this year and got to stay for free in madrid, barcelona and paris, and most important got to meet the nicest people!
have fun!

Being you mentioned the work backpack. I would pick up a copy of Lonely planet or go to the library. The lonelyplanet books are the backpackers bible. Also they have a good website to see the entry requirements for individual countries.
I also like the footprint guides.

I have backpacked around the world and always used the Lonely Planet, it is by far the best for this.
I must say though I never ever saw an Indian backpacker from India.
Good luck to you.
