depending on the room, you can choose any of these types of finishes for your paint. Example, if you are painting a high-traffic area such as a hallway with lots of messy children, or a bathroom or kitchen, you should use an interior latex paint that is a semi-gloss paint. You can wash off any dirty handprints, splattered food, etc., without ruining your paint. One thing to keep in mind is that if your walls which you are painting have a lot of defects, such as holes, cracks, etc., you need to do sufficient preparation work prior to painting, otherwise any money and time spent on painting will never look right.

Your best bet for bedrooms, living rooms, etc. is an eggshell finish. But remember, it all boils down to preference. And, don't forget, the most important thing in painting any wall, either exterior or interior, is the preparation of your surface. Good luck!

Actually, it does matter. The first thing I would think about is putting a primer on the walls before you put on the paint. You want to give the paint a good base or "tooth" for the new paint to adhere to. The primer will also make your final finish much nicer and more durable. As for the type of finish, you can use a flat paint in almost all the rooms of the house with the exception of the bathroom and possibly the kitchen. If you have kids and are concerned about the walls getting dirty, then put a satin finish on the walls instead of a flat. It's a lot easier to clean. For bathrooms with a shower, I recommend a semi-gloss finish because it will hold up much better to moisture. Be advised that if there are imperfections or blemishes on the walls, a glossier finish will allow you to see those blemishes much easier than a flat finish would. My advice, though, would be to follow the guidelines I just gave you.

Yes, it does matter. I use satin in all rooms except the bathroom and kitchen where you can use semi or high gloss which is easier to wipe clean, but if you use the shiny gloss in other rooms it looks too shiny and tacky. Satin and eggshell are about the same. The paint store will tell you the same thing, I think.

Start with clean walls and a primer. Then the rest is up to you. I use semi - gloss in my house. Flat just never cleans(even the washable) and satin and gloss just don't do it for me. Sating and gloss are actually great for accents, like trim, molding - things that you like have stand out.

It depends on how shiny you want your walls and how washable they are. Gloss is usually reserved for trim, I like semi-gloss on the walls, it's washable and reflects the light.

  • It's really up to you. The shinier the finish, the more washable the paint, but on the other hand, the flatter the finish the less you will see imperfections in your walls.
