I never had heard of pumpkin pie with cool whip or whipped cream on it till I went to college in the north. The first time I saw it I thought it was an abomination! I still would not put cool whip on it, but I might eat real whipped cream on it once in a while. Still I prefer my pumpkin pie without any topping.

Real whipped cream is the only way to go on good pumpkin or sweet potato pie! And it's easy to make at home.
Just make sure the beaters and the bowl are both icy cold and don't have a speck of grease on them anywhere. It also helps if the kitchen is cool because temperature affects the volume of the final product.

UGH Cool whip is gross. Whipped cream is super easy to make and tastes awesome if you have a hand mixer or stand mixer. You put the bowl and beaters in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to get cold. Then pour as much Heavy Whipping Cream (found in milk section of the grocery store) as you will need in the bowl and turn the machine on low. Pour in vanilla and sugar to taste (I usually use a tsp of vanilla and 1/4 or less of sugar per bowl, Splenda also works). The cream will start to get fluffy. Keep an eye on it though because if you whip it too long, it will turn to butter. Once it starts to thicken up, you can turn the mixer up higher. I personally like it thicker but each person is different.
Some people also use different things to flavor it (peach brandy, almond extract, etc). It just depends on what you're using it with. It's good either way.

WITHOUT!!! Why ruin the rich creaminess of the pumpkin pie itself? It's like putting gum in your hair. You just shouldn't do it. But, definitely having it cold from the fridge is the best way. Yum! Now I want some pumpkin pie!

Love pumpkin pie, but only with REAL whipped cream on it - no "edible oil products pretending to be cream" for me! It's worth the extra price and hassle!
