I have a new Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.1. I hate waiting for automatic updates of programs, so I set them to inform me when one is available so I can choose a convenient time to perform the update. As far as I know, I have turned off automatic updates on all installed programs. Yet, today my computer wouldn't turn on until it had finished updating something. It doesn't tell me exactly what it is updating, so I have no way to figure out where to go to get it to quit the process. Any ideas how to track it down?

I am selling my house and my realtor is representing both me and the buyer. Last week, she ordered a pest inspection (at my expense) from someone she says she works with all the time. This "pest inspector" proceeded to, in my opinion, do a full house inspection. He turned on every faucet in the house, disconnected the hose in the yard to check on the plumbing as well. When he wrote up his report, it was mainly about damage due to dry rot, his opinion about the way the dryer vent was installed, and mentioned only one area that may have been affected by insects. Is dry rot one of the areas that a pest inspector would check for?

Now I have a recorded document against my property with his estimates of all these nit-picky items that need to be repaired and it amounts to almost $8,000. I am wondering if it's my realtor's idea to use this to help knock down my price, in benefit of the buyers. I certainly don't feel like the realtor was up front with me about what this "pest" inspection was all about.

I went to a hotel a few months back, and it automatically loaded the internet connection program that was needed so I could use my laptop while I was at the hotel. Now, at home, my laptop still tries to use the hotel's connection automatically each time I boot up my computer. I have to "repair" the connection, and then it works correctly, but this is getting annoying.

I bought two subscriptions LAST year through Ebay from Magazines.com. (Only $5.00 for a year each magazine...nice price!) I bought them as Christmas gifts for my sister. She got the magazines, so I was happy.

HOWEVER, I just got charged on my Paypal account from Magazines.com for two charges of $15.00 each. Hey, it's been a full year, and what's going on? I'm asking Paypal to reverse those unauthorized charges. I'm assuming, at this point, that Magazines.com just renewed those subscriptions automatically and charged them to me. WHAT????? I have no say in this? Will I be obligated to pay for lifetime subscriptions for my sister to these magazines? This is insane and a total scam!

Anyone else have this experience?

Last Friday our daughter hit a parked car, and was arrested and taken to jail. They arrested her because an unbalanced former "friend" and neighbor of my daughter saw the accident and told the police she was on drugs. She did have prescribed pain medication in her system, but that's not illegal. She was held at the jail for about six hours and released with all charges dropped.

However, during the time she was held at the jail, this same woman then proceeded to illegally take her daughter out of the daycare, lied to the day care providers about working with CPS, and then refused to turn her over to us! We called the sheriff, of course. It was a crazy evening during which this person lied to the police officers over and over about where our granddaughter was, until after 4 hours she admitted she was hiding our granddaughter at another friends house. We got our granddaughter back later that evening.

Not only did the police NOT arrest this woman, which I don't understand, but she and her family members have been harassing my daughter since this episode took place. In a case where this person lied to officers, kidnapped and held my granddaughter hostage, is it not the responsibility of the officers to make an arrest? Nothing has happened!

Is my daughter supposed to press charges? Does she need a lawyer? She is disabled and there is not money to pay an attorney.

If anyone knows the law (state of California) and can guide us in taking the next steps, it would be truly appreciated!

I have a Dell DE051 with Intel Celeron Processor 2.53 GHz. I was on Facebook last night, my computer froze and I could not get it to shut down. I manually shut it down, then tried to boot it, but got the message "Diskette drive 0 seek failure". I did as much investigating online as I could, but it seems that this message refers to a floppy drive, which my computer does not have. I tried to reinstall Windows XP using my CD but it only got so far in installing and then said it could not find my hard disk drive. (I am not very computer knowledgeable)

I know dark chocolate is the healthiest kind of chocolate to eat. I just got a great deal on a bunch of baking chocolate, and was wondering if I could turn it into dark chocolate? Anyone have any ideas?

Our 2 1/2 year old insists that words make sense. Since she has ten "toes" and each one is a "toe", then it makes sense to her that she only has ONE "no", not numerous "nose".

Once on an outing, killing time with our 3 year old, we decided to take him for a little walk. There aren't many sidewalks in our town, so a good place to walk that is also beautifully landscaped is the grave yard. When we told our 3 year old that we were going to walk through the grave yard and look at the headstones, he looked a bit wary, but he didn't say anything. Later as we were walking there, he finally blurted out "Where are the heads?" He thought there would be heads of the people sticking up out of the ground...headstones.

I have fresh brussel sprouts, baby carrots, zucchini and potatoes. I found a few vegetable casserole recipes that call for the carrots, zucchini and potatoes, but not the brussel sprouts. If I throw them in, too, do you think it would ruin the flavor?

I co-own a house and property with my boyfriend. He is suffering some medical problems and does not have medical insurance. If he cannot pay the hospital bills, and they put a lien against the property, am I at risk for losing my half of the value?

A family member has decided she's going to dye her six year old son's hair blue. She said he asked her to, so she's going to do it. I say that as his mom she should be looking out for his welfare and realize she's setting him up to be a target of some negative attention within this small town community. Am I being too conservative in my point of view? I welcome everyone's input here.
