Somerset is proved right when the man is found tied to his bed, alive but suffering from severe mental and physical deterioration after spending a year completely immobile. He was killed for the sin sloth because of the way he lived his life.He didn't want to earn a living, he was always looking for the easy way to get what he wants, hence sloth.

I think he was the one who was kept confined to his bed and the killer took pictures of him every day as the was wasting away with no food or water. So basically he was starved to death and was found by the Detectives when he was near death. The killer cut off his hand to use his fingerprints as evidence in the Lawyer's death.
