Is Morrowind a huge step backwards?

I've been playing Oblivion on the PC for months now and have enjoyed it. Recently I've been curious about Morrowind and its expansions. I know that in its time it was widely acclaimed and popular, but would it be a huge step backwards if I played it after being used to Oblivion this whole time? I'm not just talking about graphics, but the gameplay itself.

Update:

I'm a little confused. You guys say that Morrowind's land is bigger than in Oblivion, but according to the Wikipedia article on Oblivion:

"The total above-ground area of Morrowind 's game world was roughly 10 square miles (26 km²); however, the central landmass was only around 6 square miles and then surrounded by water and tiny islands; these figures do not include either of the expansions.

With Oblivion, the aboveground areas are approximately 16 square miles (41 km²) but with considerably less water coverage and the realm of Oblivion."

Also, just out of curiosity, is there fast travel in Morrowind? It would suck to have to walk everywhere.

Many people, including me, think that Morrowind is a better game than Oblivion. (If you don't believe me, look at the elderscrolls.com forums, where people have been arguing this since Oblivion came out, and largely in favour of Morrowind.) While obviously the graphics cannot compare to the newer one, Morrowind has more quests, much, much more lore, a larger game world, and more interesting NPCs than Oblivion. Of course, there are things about Morrowind that were improved for Oblivion; many of the elements will strike you as a bit too complex after playing Oblivion but they are just things that need to be learned. And as for the previous poster who complained about walking speed, he is completely wrong. As your character levels up, the speed increases and it is possible to move quite a bit faster in Morrowind than it is in Oblivion either leveling up or using magic.

In short, play Morrowind. If you invest time in it, you will realise that it is by far the better game.

I went backwards to Morrowind as well. It's a great game, but after being spoiled by Oblivion...

In Morrowind walk speed is a snail's pace and run is only a tad bit faster than walk speeds in Oblivion. That was what annoyed me the most; I don't want it to take a year to get from one town to the next. Also, when you harvest ingredients from plants the game treats the plant as a container so you have to click the plant, click on what you want to take, and click it closed. There are a whole lot of other little details that you'll notice as well.

The graphics of course do not match Oblivion, but that's not so much of an issue. It's honestly the player walk/run speeds that made me abandon the game.

I've played Morrowind and Oblivion and both are great games. Yes the graphics in Morrowind don't come close to Oblivion but if you can get past that I'm sure you would enjoy it. It's a much larger world than Oblivion, not as realistic (think mushroom houses and giant floating creatures) but in all an excellent game.
