How, when, & why did the Dallas Cowboys get the nickname "America's Team"?
Shouldn't that have gone to the team that had won the most Super Bowls at the time that the name was given? It's not because of the star on the helmet is it?

A sports caster dubbed that nickname on the 1978 Dallas team that lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the superbowl.
They had a Heisman trophy quarterback from the naval academy in Staubach, a Heisman trophy runningback in Tony Dorsett, a doomsday defense led by Randy White and the legendary Tom Landry as head coach.

i don't have self belief your tale. the position did you "go back and forth the streets and mingle with locals"? Mexico? possibly contained in the Southwest U.S. you'll get that reaction. yet no longer many different places. The Cowboys do have a storied previous. yet enable's settle for it. They have not carried out dick in properly over a decade. a clean technology of football followers is starting to be up no longer having remembered the finest time the Cowboys even gained a playoff sport. And the Cowboys only have ONE NFC East call contained in the finest thirteen years. i don't think of of any crew as "united statesa.'s crew". yet when I had to %. one franchise that epitomized the way of life of yankee football with its triumphing custom, mythical gamers and coaches and nationwide following, it could be none except the fairway Bay Packers. Even the Pittsburgh Steelers have better declare to the mythical call of being "united statesa.'s crew" than the Cowboys and their $a million.2 billion dollar stadium do. The Cowboys characterize each little thing incorrect with the NFL. All glitz, glamour, and massive funds. Hell, the conventional fan on the conventional income couldn't arise with the money for to attend a Cowboys sport in man or woman. i wish it really is yet another thirteen years earlier Dallas wins a playoff sport, and Jerry is gazing a 0.5 empty stadium on Sundays because fee ticket expenses are too extreme.

I HAVE ALWAYS wondered the same thing. (besides the fact that I am DIEHARD Redskin fan,and the cow"girls" are my nemesis- ;)) Washington D.C. is technically our nations capitol, so that would make 'America's'team the'skins. I would think "America's Team" (by definition) would mean that our capitol(D.C) would be the only answer that makes real sense.
Also...when you are a fan of a team...(be it home team or just fave from when u were a kid) would you 'switch loyalties' because they weren't playing well? NO! Otherwise you wouldn't be a fan. So how can anyone have decided that just because a team won a few rings that they are the nation's team? The ring signifies they were the best that year...duh...grrr hate the cowboys anyway

The Cowboys are to football was the Yankees are to baseball. They have been the major team off and on through out the history of the sport.

Strictly a marketing tool used by the organization in the late 70's when the were winning. A local sportscaster mentioned the "gimmick" over the air once. The owner heard it and liked it.

Believe it was a sports commentator that started that. Probably someone on ESPN who is a Cowboy fan.

i'm guessing its because of the star. On the American flag, what does it have... a STAR...so i'm guessing that has some relevance to do with it. That's as much as i can give u without talking out of my ***.
Source(s): i live in Dallas, and watch every single Cowboys game.
