n reg Renault Laguna, running hot , can any one help? no match in the petrol tank jokes please so boring! .?

This car will heat up up quite quickly and around town will go above three qtrs on temp gauge but just below the red, on speeds of 40 mph and above temp is at around the qtr mark,.

this is a problem as i use the car and if i get stuck in traffic i dont want to bugger the head up on it, of which there are no visible signs of leakage, there is no contamination in the oil or water, so i am at a loss,

would a compression test shed any clues ?

compression check will tell you that cylinder is sealing properly & from what you say dose not sound like head gasket.Renault electrics are quite tempremental, before you change anything get an earth lead from the battery straight to the engine as this is often degrades giving high resistence and temp sensor goes barking mad.If that does not work then look at changing temp sensor then thermostate.

Compression test is easy, as is changing the thermostat.

Worth draining all the coolant and try again with new anti-freeze.

Rule out the easy stuff first. Head gasket may show as bubbles in the reservoir !

Sound like the electric fan is not switching on or the radiator is blocked.

Try flushing the cooling system with Rad flush, remember to replace the anti freeze though.

these cars are prone to head-gasket failier,

having an alloy head, there usually ok until the block heats up causing the head to expand and over heat?

    hope this helps?

The electric couling fan or sensor is faulty

  • 1 decade ago

    could be thermostate problems

replace this first run vehicle up to temperature & check the electric fan is working correctly
