Bricks. Can one purchase just a handful rather than a job lot?
I'm going to need about a dozen ordinary house-bricks for a job in the house, but am not sure whether how they are sold. Is it possible to buy bricks individually (or in small amounts) or do you have to buy them by the gross or something. I don't want to go on the thieve from a local building site for the few bricks I need, but if I can't buy just a few rather than loads I might just have to. Anyone have an idea of price per brick. Pennies, surely?
There's a few American answers here, so I'll just add that yes I am in the UK. I just need some bricks (any bricks as long as they are all the same) to support the shower unit base that we are putting in the bathroom. We've been under the impression that places like B&Q, Wickes, Homebase etc, sell by the hundred or whatever and not smaller sales. Its good to see most people disagreeing and saying you can buy as many or as few as you want. There are several good answers here.

Easy, just go down to a local INDEPENDENT/SOLE TRADER TYPE builders merchants who will be happy to sell you as many or as little as you like. Better to save time by looking in the thomson local phone directory and phoning before going.
Price depends very much on type of brick and there are handreds of varieties. Base price for the very basic brick should be between 40-80p.

Sorry to say but no. You can only buy bricks at a brick yard by the thousand or five hunderd. But if you look around for a new house being built the mason can sale you a dozon. The cost of brick is about $325.00 a thousand where i live. A brick mason want mind if you go up and ask him to sale a few bricks. But it"s the owner that is paying for them. The mason gets paid for what he lays, By the thousand. So see if you can find the owner.

Go to the nearest Building Site, and offer the Builders a flask of tea or coffee, or some freshly baked biscuits in return for a few bricks.
My Dad has worked on a few building sites when the builders have been throwing un-used items in the skip, and on several occasions he has come home with enough new bricks to go around the edge of the drive.

You can buy as few as you need and yes just pennies.
Are you in UK? If so if your bricks re linking into old brickwork ensure you get the right size! Bricks used to be 9 inches by 4 inches by 3 inches. New common brick is the metric equivalent and therfore slightly smaller meaning your courses won't align.
Don't know US brick sizes

Sure, builders yards always have broken packs. Just go and ask.
There are hundres of types of bricks so either take a sample or walk around the yard first to get the type you want.
There is no point going to the counter and saying "can I have 10 ordinary bricks please", the choice it too great.
They range from about 20p to 75p

Home Depot and Lowes sell them individually - generally for landscaping. I've gotten them for as low as 26 cents each, or as high as 54 cents. If you're going to lay them down in a pattern, watch to make sure they're true 4x8. Some cheaper bricks are 3.75 by 7.75, and you end up with gaps.

Most stores sell bricks either per piece or by the square foot. If you are cost conscious, you can compare the two. There are approx. 4.5 bricks per square foot in a standard 4" X 8" paver.

Try your local hardware/building stores, or anyplace that does general brick or garden stone work. They will quite often sell them by the piece. If you have a store that sells recycled supplies (like our Habitat for Humanity Restore), you might find something there. They get all sorts of stuff from people doing renovations and quite often have something that will work.

There are many, many different styles of brick. Depending on the size and style, they can go from 50 cents (recycled) to a few bucks each.
