external usb hard drive not being recognised by win xp?
i bought a new 80gb external hard drive. The information says i dont need new drivers since XP has all this enabled but i plug it into the usb port and nothing happens. What is wrong with it? I have plugged it in right.
Everything is 2.0 usb enabled. it seems that there is no driver installed, where do i get the driver from online?
it says the driver is working properly yet the drive doesnt show up in "my computer"

A few recommendations.
Try to go to the manufactures website, and check to see if there are any available drivers for your particular harddrive. In my experience even if something is suppose to be plug and play, that's usually not the case.
Also, if nothing else go to Manage your computer, right click on my computer. and check removable drives. Can your computer see the drive? If so the problem might be as simple as changing the drive letter to something that is not being currently used by the computer. Good Luck.

Just as a test if you have access to another PC with xp (friends, work, school etc..) try it in there, if the drive does not show up on theirs either then it may be the actual drive that's at fault and would get it exchanged, if you can see it on another machine then you know it's some driver, configuration etc. on your machine.
You could be doing alot of things to try and get it to work and it may be the drive itself that's damaged.

Try a different USB port. Do you hear a noise from the computer when you plug it in and then unplug it? Also check the device manager and make sure there are no errors.

It's the driver on your USB port. Press start. RIGHT click Mycomputer, properties, hardware, device manager. Now find the USB port click the + sign now right click and click update driver - if that doesn't do it uninstall them all and re-install them. any problem - don't worry - they re-install automatically if you restart your computer.

Be sure soth of them are in same USB type eg. USB 2.0
I think your usb HDD supports only USB 2.0 (faster technology) but your motherboard(hardware) doesnt support 2.0 technology, it supports only USB 1.1 type, try to use it with another computer which supports USB 2.0
