Strange crusty, powerdy stuff appears on top of tank...?

It cleans off easily enough, but is comes back over time. Is this some sort of residue from water evaporation or is it something else?

They call that "salt creep". It's the result of hard water and disolved salts. There is a product available fro Foster and smith to eliminate it, bu i wouldn't bother, it dosn't hurt anything and it's easy to clean up. Here is a link anyway. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...

You have hard water, meaning that there are a lot of minerals disolved in the water. As it evaporates the minerals form that stuff.

It's pretty harmless, but I don't have any really sensitive fish.

I live in Sacramento California, and I have very hard water.
