Considering only reliability of the connection prefer any provider that has its own infrastructure rather than resellers, because they have to cope with their issues plus the issues of the main infrastructure provider (which i suspect they are not too keen on giving them priority)

Sometimes the resellers not only offer cheaper or value added, but also good support, software and hardware, what would make them more reliable, because i.e. your router-modem would be better quality, and your problems would be solved quicker, thus increasing the service (considered connectivity+support) reliability.

I have BT and it works very well, but I had a bad start, the initial installation had some issues and had to come again. Then my area was officially "upgraded" for 6 oor 8 megs, but they tested it and it would not support that, until a couple of months after the announcement. Now it is working well at something like 6megs last time i checked. Actually i don recall any downtime i could definitely blame to BT (I had a couple of funny wifi issues that i am not totally sure if it was the router, bt or neighbours :) )

I reccomend you to google "dsl speed test" or "broadband speed test" and browse those sites, a couple of them are .org and i remember one that required to complete a survey on reliability, so they may disclose some rankings.

I suspect that today reliability is quite good in general, but you may have problems in specific areas, so any general rating probably won´t do much.. you may an old phone switch, have electricity problems that makes the router "hiccup", etc. So I would try to get the opinions from people nearby your area (in the same building would be ideal),

And, again, consider other issues, like cost of changing providers, quality of the equipment they provide, ditto for software (antivirus, firewall, etc that comes with some packages), also how it ties with other services like internet phone (BT communicator), cable tv (Sky has a competing service and you need to switch to them)

    Good luck with your research

I'm pretty happy with Yahoo/SBC DSL. They all have their problems so it would be difficult to say which is most reliable, but I have had it for 3 years and problems are small. (About 12.99 mth)

    Good Luck

p.s. They have been bought out by AT&T and this is the phone number 1-877-722-3755

If you're in the UK, then keeping to the big names, such as BT, NTL or Telewest, would be better. They are more reliable than the cheaper ISPs so well worth paying that little bit extra.

I'm with Cogeco and can't complain. My plan rates at the top of independant tests for speed, the cap is good--still not enough for me, but 60GB, even during peak hours it doesn't slow down and I can't remember the last time it was down.
