Really need a computer whiz ! What happened?
What would make 6 months of Yahoo! mail dissappear from an account? It was not deleted. The computer was having problems and was reformatted. The account was active. Could this be a virus? Is there any way to retrieve the lost e-mails? Some were very important. Is there a way to contact Yahoo! about this? I'm afraid that's all the detail I can give as it wasn't my computer ( posting for a friend)

I'm not all THAT great at computers, but it might be that your friend is online all the time and doesn't return their sister's phone calls....

No its not a virus.
A quick search of the help sections will tell you that mail, kept in the inbox or sent folder, will not be deleted until you do so yourself.
I helped someone with a similar problem sometime ago and, as it turned out, Yahoo was preforming some maitenence on their mail servers which resulted in some unavailable accounts. ( I think it had to do with updating for Yahoo mail Beta)
You can contact yahoo mail at the source listed below, but I believe theres a fee involved.
And sorry to tell you- but once something is deleted from a server, its gone for good.

if the computer crashes, it shouldn't delete the e-mail, as the e-mail isn't on the computer, but on the Yahoo server. I'm sure there is a way to contact yahoo, after all, someone runs the site. Call them, tell them what happened, hopefully they have some crash-fail mechanism, or else ur e-mails are lost sry.

If your friend was using something like ypops or mr postman so he could open his Yahoo mail in Outlook Express then it would delete email that had been red unless he specifically cheked it to leave downloaded mail in the sever. The option is in Outlook Express, Tools, Accounts, Properties, Advanced.
Once deleted they cannot be recovered..

oh man... umm.. Im a computer wiz but am not sure. It wouldn't have anything to do with the computer. The computer only gets you the e-mail. yahoo was having some problems with my account thats sounds like your problem. I really truely dont have any clue... Did you create a new folder for retrieving email and then delete it? Thats wut my problem was.

It is my guess that yahoo does not keep back up for your e-mail. Once you open it and put it in a file it is on the hard drive. when you reformatted the hard drive it removes all the information off that drive. sorry

Yahoo mail isn't stored on your (or whoevers) computer...it is stored on Yahoo's servers...when you log into Yahoo mail, you are viewing mail stored on their equipment....
I'm guessing maybe the account was hacked? No virus would (likely) do that...

you could try looking in your trash folder of your Yahoo mail but if it isn;t in there then I fear you have lost it all, there is no point asking yahoo because they wont keep backups of your mail.
