Has anyone else heard of this remedy for motion sickness, and if so can you explain why it works?

When I was a child my brothers and I would get car sick, my Grandparents swore that if my parents put brown paper against the skin of our somachs for the trips we would be fine. My mother hesitated, of course, (how could there be any science in this?) eventually though she gave in, my brother being allergic to products such as gravol and at her wits end. Well, it worked on us all, and after that point we always had brown paper on our stomachs during long car rides. We were too young to have it work for psychosematic reasons, and though we have all seen it work we (including my mother) still can't believe it does. This last long weekend we took a long trip (the first one with my young daughters,) and after an hour or so in the car my six year old was complaining of motion sickness, I had a bag in the trunk and put it on her stomach (having no gravol, and remembering my youth..) and it worked, she was fine the rest of the 8 hour trip. Does anyone know why?

I believe it was the power of suggestion that worked and not the brown paper bag. Do other colors work as well? You might try an experiment of your own. On three kids use three different color bags and tell the kids that only one color (the blue one) will work. See what happens.

I also agree with the nurse. If someone puts a brown paper against your stomach, the only reaction it would cause would be the skin exposing to the paper, which might contain unknown "additives". If the user feels that it works, maybe it works just for them. Scientifically, if the user believes s/he is being cured of motion sickness, then thethinking process might help cure it.

I would like to say that not only do I totally agree with what everyone else has answered -(that it's the power of suggestion) but that being a child would actually make you MORE receptive to psychosomatic suggestion. Children have fewer preconceived notions, due to their lack of life experience, making them more open to subliminal impressions.

    Hope this helped!

Ask your wellness practitioner - there are numerous prescription drugs that paintings properly for this subject. additionally, at cases such extreme action affliction is a demonstration of yet another ailment that desires prognosis and therapy. homestead remedies and "selection" drugs do not help in such cases, and often do not help in any respect in spite of effortless, common action affliction.
