Is a green pumpkin edible?

A well-meaning neighbor has given me odds and ends from his garden. I have an under-ripe pumpkin. I actually thought it was a round zucchini! Cutting it open, it looks and smells like a pumpkin.

Well you need to find out if it is actually a pumpkin. There are varieties of winter squash that have a green skin but orange flesh. If it is a pumpkin though, don't eat it because it is not ripe. By the way I did learn working on a farm that there can be many mutant varieties in a squash field because the cross pollinate. My farmer friend likes to try them to see if he has stumbled on a new varietal.
