Has anyone ever had a "borderline" blood pregtest and NOT been pregnant?
Hello everyone,
Last night I was in the ER for severe abdominal pains (probably related to endometriosis) and they did a beta HCG and the result was "borderline". My HCG level was 12. My question is, has anyone ever had a level of more than 5 and not been pregnant? To my knowledge I've never had a beta of 12 and not been pg, myself, but since i don't get blood tests all the time I can't be sure of that, obviously. Only once I did have a result of 7 and it was never a confirmed pregnancy, possibly a chemical pg I guess. But 12 seems awfully high to not have something going on I'd think. Any ideas? I'm honestly not sure when my period is due but I think sometime in the next week.
Thanks!
-Jess
The problem with going back for a repeat tomorrow is that, as I'd mentioned, this test was done at the emergency room and they won't just do one there and since I know from past experience that just getting one done at any other lab isn't accurate as each lab is different. One time I was pg I had blood tests done 12 hours apart (one at an ER and one at the doctors) and the numbers were WAY different. I WISH I could just get another beta done tomorrow. I'm going nuts :)

One thing for sure is this...every lab is different I guess, but the level of HCG (the hormone they test for in your blood for pregnancy) would be the same at each lab. The only thing that could change would be how far along they would tell you that you were due to the very broad spectrum of what levels mean to different labs. Your level do fluctuate during the day which is the cause for your different levels at different places in one day. If you were to take one specimen to two labs, the results would be identical depending on your transport time.
I work in a hospital laboratory and deal with ER's and HCG levels all the time. I have also had a miscarriage and have vast knowledge of what these levels mean. If you had a level of 12, most likely you either had a chemical pregnancy or you were in the process of miscarrying. Another possibility is 1. the lab ran someone elses specimen instead of yours or 2. The machine they run it on misinterpreted your result....these things DO happen more often then you think. Now, a level of 12 is not "awfully high" to not have something going on. During a normal pregnancy these level go into the tens of thousands. You should really go to the doctor and tell him what happened and to get a repeat. If you were having a miscarriage and there is still some tissue in your uterus you could get very sick.
FYI most labs consider a level of either less than 2 or less than 5 as a negative test.

I would suggest going to your regular doctor and ask them to do another blood test. Tell them what happened at the ER and let them know you want to confirm the test. Don't go back to the ER though... too expensive, and that's not what they're there for. 12 does seem awfully high to be borderline! Good luck!

Well if you are pregnant that number will double each day. Go back tomorrow and request a second blood test. Or buy one of those urine tests that you can do at home.
