In your opinion does television advertising effect girls and women's self esteem in a negative way? Does television advertising contribute to the amount of eating disorders in young ladies in today's American society?

Most definately!!!!! These poor girls today think that they have to be a size 0 to be pretty and its a real shame that the clothing industry has this much affect on them. My granddaughters are only 10 & 11 and they see these commercials and think they are pretty enough or small enough and it makes me want to go through the television and smack someone. Kids have it rough enough without all this garbage. Great question btw!!!!!!!!

You should really do a search on Jean Kilborn and Jackson Katz in order to get a very professional answer to this question.

In the Macho Paradox, Jackson Katz details how men, over the years have appeared bigger on television and in the movies. We have gone from Humphrey Bogart, who was slightly built, with a small pistol; to Arnold S. in the Terminator with a bazooka.

On the other hand, woman have slowly faded away on the screen. We have gone from Marylin Monroe, who was a 16, to Kirsten Dunst, who is a 0.

On billboards and in magazines, women are smaller, shorter, and perfectly submissive to the male shadow figure.

Some people aspire to be this way. If you let kids see these kinds of things, then their perception of real life will be contorted. This is when the kids believe that being a size 8 or 10 is a bad thing.

Then there are all the diet commercials pretty much telling all of us that we are fat. Let's think for a second...do you know any female figures that dominate media enterprises. In reality, 6 very rich men have decided what television, and the movies are going to look like. So these 6 men like anorexic females? And we let these slime determine who we are, and what size we wear. I say, stay chubby, but stay in shape. That way, if anyone calls you fat, you can kick their weenie butts.
