It depends on how far along you are when you find out that you are pregnant. In some cases, the doctor will tell you that it could stress out the baby (if you find out late that you are pregnant) and you decide to quit. If you find out early, then sure, you can quit cause its healthier for you (not necessarily the baby because the baby doesnt breathe in the smoke. All this crap about the babys lungs is bullshit. They're in a sac. They dont breathe anything into their lungs).

Secondly, the only reason they say that smoking causes premature and underweight babies is because most people who smoke dont eat much...and of course, being pregnant, youre supposed to eat. I smoked while I was pregnant but I cut back to about four or five cigarettes a day (coming from a pack a day), but I was constantly eating so I wasnt one who substituted food for a cigarette (some do).

My baby came out one ounce shy of eight pounds and is very healthy.

But, if you catch it early, and you feel weird about smoking, don't. If youre finding it extremely stressful to quit, just cut back.

Ummm no its not ok ....you have to watch every thing you do while you are pregnant , if you want your baby to be born healthy i sujest quit ....And besides just cause a baby looks normal who was born to a mother who smoked while she was pregnant doesnt mean a thing , babies who are born the women that smoked while pregnant have a greater chance breathing problems , asthma , brocidis , and developing chronic ear infections , so weigh out the risks and decide what would be better for your baby , just look at it this way its only 9 months out of your life to make sure he/she has a long and healthy life...

YES you should stop smoking and any doctor will agree. The harm to your baby may not be initially obvious but it can increase risks of breathing problems like asthma and it can also hinder the physical development of the foetus. Plus think of it like this - if you can stop smoking for nine months with your babies health as motivation then you should be able stop forever.. aparently things taste nicer and you'll save an absolute fortune. Not meeting an early grave having died a long, slow and painful death may also be a slight positive. Sorry to be so strong but smoking killed both my grandparents and i wouldn't want your unborn child to experience the same thing with its mum!

When you smoke your fetus is in a confined smoke-filled womb. Its heartbeat speeds it coughs and sputters and, worst of all due to insufficient oxygen, it can't grow and thrive as it should. The results can be catastrophic. Smoking has been linked to some 115,000 miscarriages and 5,600 infant deaths a year. it can also increase the risk of a wide variety of pregnancy complications. Just because a women smoke with her children and they appear to come out find in the beginning does not mean they won't have complications later so don't go off of that. I met a man in my Medical Assistant class and he had to have his vocal cords remove because of cancer, the funny thing is that he never smoke a day in his life but his mother did when she carried him and around him when he was a baby. If your boyfriend mom smoke and nothing happen good for her but that doesn't mean nothing want happen to your baby, be smart because if you do and something does happen you won't forgive yourself. Good luck and be smart.

It's not ok to smoke while pregnant. I smoked while I was pregnant with both of my kids. I don't think it's a good idea to quit cold turkey, but if you could at least cut back a little at a time, it's better for you and the baby.

Smoking while you are pregnant is totally irresponsible in my view, but people must do as they please and live with the consequences of their actions, if I was pregnant there is no way I would smoke, it's too precious a gift to abuse like that. I am sure there are people out there who have been lucky and their baby was healthy, but I am sure there are people out there that are living proof that smoking during pregnancy is harmful.

yeah..smoking,drinking and taking unprescripted drugs while you are pregnant is not good for you and for the baby.it WILL cause SERIOUS problems not only to you but most especially to your baby. it is also better that if you got a relative or someone living with you who is smoking, they should stop it and mind the effects it will give to the baby.or if they can't help it,they should not smoke when you are around.any form of pollution will definetly affect the baby's development.they are sensitive so it is better to avoid all sorts...

My sister smoked through her last pregnancy too her 4th child. they say you shouldn't smoke because there's a high chance of having asthma. But nothing happened to my nephew, he came out a perfectly healthy baby. so you can smoke if pregnant..but if you feel like it'll harm your baby then maybe you should stop.

smoking is bad for the baby smoking affects everything from before the conception all through pregnancy. (a man smoking affects his sperm) so you need to keep this baby as healthy as possible. don't drink don't smoke don't over eat ( there is no such thing as eating for two until you are 7 months and then an extra jacket potato is enough) eat organic and take your prenatal vitamins....

When a woman continues to smoke during pregnancy, the risks to the unborn child are great. These statistics come out of the 2004 Surgeon General's Report on Smoking*:

Research has shown that women's smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of pregnancy complications, premature delivery, low-birth-weight infants, stillbirth, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

The nicotine in cigarettes may cause constrictions in the blood vessels of the umbilical cord and uterus, thereby decreasing the amount of oxygen available to the fetus. Nicotine also may reduce the amount of blood in the fetal cardiovascular system.

Nicotine is found in breast milk.

Babies of mothers who smoked during pregnancy have lower birth weightLow birth weight is a leading cause of infant deaths, resulting in more than 300,000 deaths annually among newborns in the United States.

In general, pregnant smokers eat more than pregnant nonsmokers, yet their babies weigh less than babies of nonsmokers. This weight deficit is smaller if smokers quit early in their pregnancy.

Smoking by the mother causes SIDS. Compared with unexposed infants, babies exposed to secondhand smoke after birth are at twice the risk for SIDS, and infants whose mothers smoked before and after birth are at three to four times greater risk.

Mothers' smoking during pregnancy reduces their babies' lung function.

In 2001, 17.5% of teenaged mothers smoked during pregnancy. Only 18% to 25% of all women quit smoking once they become pregnant.

Smoking by children and adolescents hastens the onset of lung function decline during late adolescence and early adulthood.

Smoking by children and adolescents is related to impaired lung growth, chronic coughing, and wheezing.
