Lower back pain... serious answers only please?

For the past several days I have had a very intense and sharpish pain in my lower back on the left side. I've had it on and off for months, and it always seemed to be at it's worst when I was working. I quit my job several weeks ago, and after just a few days... the pain was gone. However, it suddenly came back a few days ago and I'm looking for some advice on how to treat the pain until I can get to the doctor in 4 days. Streching, medications and just plain lying down have done nothing to help. Any intelligent suggestions? Thanks so much.

Update:

Thanks for all of the answers so far. For those who are recommending different OTC drugs... I've tried EVERYTHING and nothing works. And I have a dr's apt already booked, it's on Friday, I'm just looking for any kind of relief until she can check it out. Thanks again!

    Ibuprofen, and leg exercises,

I've found if I lay flat on my back on a hard surface and pull my knee to my chest I start getting some relief. I also go to a chiropractor.. I was skeptical at first but general 6 visits will get me back to wear I need to be.

The biggest problem most people have is the mattress they sleep on, too hard or too soft.. The best sleeping is on your side, with a pillow between your legs if possible. If you sleep on your stomach or back you will exarcerbate the problem.

I have had lower back pain for the last 2 years...i've tried chiropractic care and physical therapy and medicine....

my pain is in the center though? on the side it could be kidneys, or...

posture, if you sit at a desk for long periods....i've tried a seat cushion, "seat solution" (looks like a wedge with a hole in the center, where the spine is) that elevates the back part of my legs.

    That helps some.

    Other posture tips:

Make sure that your knees aren't above your seating angle.

and try to sit on the floor of your pelvic area.

Try exercises that strengthen the back muscles.

Also, try taking aleve regularly for a week. I was told by a doctor that medicine builds up in your system and you have to take it for a period of time before you could see results.

After all this, I have noticed some improvements, but I am wondering that I may have fibroids.

Good luck on relieving your pain. I have thought about quitting my job as the pain is sometimes unbearable.

I felt the same pain and no one could diagnose it. I had what 20% x-chicken pox patients have. Hepes zoster. It gets accumalated in the lower spine and fron there one time comes when ones immunity system weakens and it gets a chance to reck your nerves near the lower hips and down till the knee on one leg. It starts with a throbbing pain and then after about two to three weeks ugly large lacy and very painful blisters appear.

I do do do hope its not that but u better check with the doc cause the pain is very severe and u must try to stop the out break under all cercumstances or u mioght have to suffer like I did.

    take care

Try alternating ice with heat... ice for 20 minutes, heat for 20, relax for 20. If one or the other irritates your back, then just do the one that's comfortable for you.

Also, if it's nerve type pain, try lying flat on the floor, legs stretched out. Bring one leg up to your chest, pull it in with your arms until you feel a slight pulling sensation to the back of your thigh... pull your leg into your chest until the pulling sensation is just to the point of uncomfortable. Hold for a slow count of 10. Repeat with opposite leg. Do at least 5 with each side, more if you can tolerate it.

Cat stretches may also afford you some relief.

I would advise you to avoid taking any medications, OTC or otherwise, at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. You want to go in uncomfortable so that your physician has a better chance of finding the culprit.

Man, I'm sorry, what a lot of mislead answers!

Go to your local library or bookstore or online bookseller and request the book "Prolo Your Back Pain Away!" and read it! (or any of the other books by by Ross A. Hauser and Marion A. Hauser) You'll learn so much! Then consult with the author and maybe get advice for choosing a prolotherapist in your area. (His contact info is in the back of his book) The other great thing, but harder to scource out perhaps, is a proper adjustment of his top-most vertabrae. Did you know it's out of place since birth in 99.9% of people? And made worse in many by a great number of factors. I just had this adjustment after my god-parents and their daughter did and it's amazing and permanet! (one-time!) Guaranteed! Visit www.atlasprofilax.ch from there you can find the three practitioners in the states and call them up to consult with them. You

Its probably some vertabraical or spinal problem. Try not to hunch and move around too often. Take sufficient amount of calcium and vitamin tablets, milk, etc. And get a doctor as soon as possible. Sometimes things like this may seem minor, but it maybe something very serious.
