2001 Pontiac Sunfire - Service - Trac Off & ABS Lights all on....?
I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire. A while back while driving my "Service" light came on, and was then followed by my "Trac Off" and my "((ABS))" light. We initially thought that it was just a warning light to get the brakes changed.
The brakes have been replaced - both front and back. Including rotors. The lights are still on.
Also, sometimes right before the lights come on, and when you first step on the brake there's very slight resistance in the brake pedal and it makes a noise that sounds like a motor of sorts shutting down.
Is it possible that the sensor is bad for the ABS system. And that the noise I hear is the ABS actually shutting off?
Anyone have any experience with this problem?
I took it to Meineke for an oil change and the 16 or 24 point inspection and they never mentioned why it was on, but did mention that I needed brakes. I had figured that it would solve the problem. But it hasn't.
Thanks!
Forgot to mention that the we also just replaced the wheel bearing (the whole hub assembly) as we had one bad wheel bearing.

Anytime a problem arises in the antilock brake system ,the trac light comes on to. Wheel speed sensors tell ABS control module which tire might be sliding like during panic stop. Traction control works by picking up wheel speed sensor data and using that to determine if your spinning a tire taking off .Bottom line is you need to have it scanned for ABS codes to know what component has failed.

Old question, but poorly answered so here goes...
The lights are all related. You have a problem in the ABS system and the ABS control module has disabled it. That s the brake pedal resistance and ABS motor noise that you re hearing when you hit the brake pedal. Likely an issue with the ABS wiring to one of the wheel speed sensors (GM used regular, twisted pair copper wiring that flexes with suspension movement and work hardens, then breaks inside the wire insulation where you can t see the break), as the sensors themselves rarely go bad. Unless they are of the type that are integrated into the wheel bearing assembly. Those will malfunction when the bearing goes bad. You still have your regular, base hydraulic brakes though, so no worries there. Just no anti-lock function.
The traction control system uses the ABS system to perform its function, so any time the ABS computer detects a problem severe enough to disable the ABS it also disables the traction control and illuminates the Trac Off light. So fix the ABS issue, and both the ABS and Trac Off lights will turn off. The Service light may need to be reset independently if it doesn t clear on its own. Google 2002 Sunfire Service Light Reset Procedure for that.

My Pontiac Grand Am has been doing the same thing. It usually comes on right when I first start off from being parked. I usually just stop, turn off the engine and restart. Everything seems to reset and I'm good to go agian for a few weeks. Mine has never made the noise with it. I'm not sure why it happens, but Mine has been doing this for a few months.

well, typically, it is a wheel speed sensor. proper electronic diagnosis will determine which wheel it is. if the wiring is intact, it will then indicate you need to replace the wheel bearing/abs assembly. if you take it to a backdoor shop, they will install a part and give you a lifetime parts warranty. if you take it to a gm dealer, it will cost a little more, but you will have a lifetime parts and LABOR guarantee. just a tip...

looks like your wheel velocity sensor or ABS unit is the perpetrator. Autozone says they won't verify it because of fact something become blown out. i think of they mean your fuse. The ALDL plug (placed under the steerage column interior the knee bolster) has diverse pins. One pin directly communicates with the ECM, others the BCM, and so on. A fuse controls skill from those pins. undecided which fuse, yet your provider handbook ought to enable you understand. verify this fuse - I guess it has blown. replace fuse and characteristic your diagnostic codes checked for greater desirable definition of the challenge.
