Should the national anthem be changed to America the Beautiful?

Well, the USA *was* created through revolution and war. The history of human rights is that each freedom and liberty and right was fought for, and its price was paid in blood. America could be ugly as sin - it is not its physical beauty that draws people here - it is the freedoms and rights that were fought for.

Personally, I like the Battle Hymn of the Republic. But, then, I don't shy away from our history.

America The Beautiful is a nicer tune and is easier to sing but Star Spangled Banner reflects American bravery against British aggression. In that sense it's like Scotland's National Anthem, Flower of Scotland

I say keep it, but then I'm just a recent immigrant hoping to get citizenship soon.

I'm not sure why there's a problem with our national anthem sounding somewhat military. Is it your impression we are a nation of pacifists? If so, what evidence do you have to support this theory?

Do you realize that without military violence, most of the states East of the Mississippi would be British Colonies, California to Texas would be Mexico, the Dakotas and Montana probably would still be wilderness, Washington would be Canada, and the rest would be French?

You can be blind to the truth if you want to, but the fact is that a military anthem is completely appropriate.

No - did you read the history behind the Star Spangled Banner - it's author Francis Scott Key was not in the military - he wrote it during a war, but because he was proud of our country and our symbol "the Flag"

The national anthem should not be changed Francis Scott Key wrote that song while aboard a ship in the revolution of america. The high notes are a bit tricky to sing though. I sing bass maybe a tenor.

One reason I have always heard that people would like to see it changed is that America the Beautiful is easier to sing, most people just can't hit those high notes on the Star Spangled Banner. (oops)

Yes, I agree. It celebrates the country, rather than a battle.

It wasn't our national anthem until 1931, far beyond any sort of recognition of the War of 1812 (which is what it was written about).

It's one of the very, very few national anthems that celebrate war or battle (La Marsaillaise a notable exception).

I think the Star Spangled Banner has tradition. It reminds us of the birth and history of our great nation.

NO. The SSB is a military anthem, to celebrate our successful defeat of the Brits. It embodies who we are and what we fought for and should remind all Americans exactly why we fight and die for our freedoms.

America the Beautiful is nice and all but a rather blah anthem.

I have no problem with that, It sound and sings better.
