Why isn't it Racist?

Typically when there is a group that has been recently repressed in a country, there are efforts to "balance" things.

As you know, things were really ugly for blacks, even within the last 50 years. Since blacks weren't really IN film or say on "white" baseball teams, etc, these are efforts to help balance things. Yes, there are more blacks in film now than before, but if you look at percentage of blacks in mainstream movies as compared with percentage of blacks in society, they would STILL be underrepresented. Which is why these awards are still carrying on.

And I agree with you on the "voices of color" thing. Celebrating "colors" should celebrate ALL races. I think "color" tends to be a carryover from the term "colored" which was used to describe black people 50 years ago (and is still used by my mom). And...the NAACP still uses it because it would mess up their acronym.

God, i've seen this question at least 1000 times.

For the 1001 time, blacks were allowed these things because blacks weren't allowed to be proud of their contributions to history, as you know unless you've been living in the woods somewhere. And, as you should know unless you don't own a television, blacks and minorities, in general, are grossly underrepresented in the media. Why shouldn't you have a white movie award and the like? Probably because you dominate the airwaves now anyway so what do you need it for.

If you own a tv, turn it own and count the numbers of whites to black or any other minority and you'll hopefully see why people have allowed these things to exist.

So, since you asked a question, I hope you can gain an understanding and be enlightened. But, you'll probably just continue to think the way you do which makes me wonder how you really view your "friends of other colors."

Reasons why we don't have;

American Indian history month- killed them all (well most) and ashamed of it

European American history month- this is studied in school all year long. No one white refer rs to them selves as "European American"

Asian history month- I really don't know. Good question. I'm sure if the Asians wanted a month, they would get one. They have to ask for it or create it themselves, like the African Americans did.

If you feel that strongly about it, then stand up and say something. Take some initiative, like the African Americans did. Ancestors stopped bitching and did something about the injustices of this society. Maybe you should use them as an example. Stop bitching and do something about it! I'm sick of the whining! Do something!!!!!!!

And maybe you should talk to the WHITE people who own BET if you think it's racist. In a way, it is racist, because the people who do the programming assume that all black people like the progams they show. I don't like most of them, and I'm black. So do something!!!!!

Well these things came about because people were being excluded.......There is no need for a European history month quite frankly cause your history is celebrated every month.......Oh yeah why not have an Indian heritage month, or Asian heritage month, why not??? Ever heard of the the Great White Way---what do you think that stands for.......

Oh I'm not calling you racist.........and at some point when there is true equality there will be no need for any black history month, BET, etc....in the meantime if people of color are still being misrepresented or unrepresented by major networks....they will have their own.......

When I was in the US Air Force we had to "recognize" Black History MONTH, Hispanic Heritage MONTH, and something about American Indian MONTH. When is it going to be "Regular Ol' White Guy MONTH" ?

Why is is OK to have Black Entertainment Television, BET? What about White Guy Television Network? (Is that CMT?)

What about the annual "Black College Reunion" in Daytona Beach? Is "White College Reunion" actually "Spring Break"?

Why does every town and city in America have to have a "Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard"? Does that make ANYONE feel better?

MLK Jr did a lot for the Black population of America, however, most did not pick up where he left off! MLK Jr wasn't talking about getting handouts forever, he was talking about Blacks getting off their a*s and make a good life for themselves. I'm afraid he might be real disappointed with progress 30 some years after he died. I am. Some of my best friends are Black.

This is called reverse discrimination and it's Bullsh*t!

We got 12 months--lets use each month for a minority.

Its time to put a halt to particular race "honoring months"

and go with the fact . You are American.

lets work for our country and not further division.

I'm Indian-Cherokee but we don't get a day much less a week or month.

Grandparents-presidents-mothers get a day

-fathers-black race (MLK) get a day. but Indians who helped WHITE and OTHERS get the shaft.

well, black people, we don't do that kinda stuff to be racist. ya know? i mean we created BET and all that stuff because we felt that we were treated unfairly.

Everything on TV was white, white, and more white. Rarely any black people were shown on TV. Yes, that's changed a lot, but it's still white, white white.

I think there should be Asian, Latino ,etc. months also, but it's up to those people to get those things started. I know that sounds mean but, if I'm black, and u don't put me on TV that much, I'm a try to get more black people on TV, magazines, etc. if i were Asian, i would try to get more Asians on TV, magazines, etc.

So, how would it be considered racist just because i want my people to be given more credit than they have right now?

PS. lol, white people have all the other months. They're called January, March, April, May, June,July, August, September, October, November, and December. Shoot! wanna say there's a Latino History Month, but some white people still take it as their own! lol

I completely despise the idea of segregation, and all of my african-american and hispanic friends feel it is wrong as well. My best friend (who is black ) said to me she felt that african-americans and hispanics didn't need to be reminded of their history, they aren't stupid and can stay in touch with theri roots without a segregatoinist month!

I agree. Grambling is (or was) a black university. Remember what happened when U. of Alabama was a white university? They had to call the national guard.

What about WET (White Entertainment Television), or Caucasian Magazine (instead of Ebony).

Mainly because black people were enslaved in this country. There is a lot of guilt built up around that.

You don't see this in Europe, it's really an American thing.
