Essentially, air is slightly blue, and there is so much of it that it looks like a blue bowl over us. but when the blue light has been scattered that only leaves orange and red to be scattered at sunset, when there is more air to travel through.

If the sky were red or orange I don't think our atmosphere would be very breathable for us aerobic organic critters. Besides, if it were red or orange we'd just be asking why it wasn't blue, don't you think?
