After you Sneeze.....?

We say "Bless You" when someone sneezes.

Where did this saying originate?

I am not sure if it originates here but it is related. One of the symptoms of the bubonic plague was sneezing. Usually you died within a couple of days of first symptoms (one of which was sneezing). Saying God Bless you was because it was likely the sneezer would die within the next couple of days.

There is an old superstition that when a person sneezed their soul momentarily left their body, giving the Devil a chance to sneak in, hence we would say 'God Bless You' to keep the Devil out. I'm not exactly sure where it came from.

It's an old legend that when you sneeze, that part of your soul exits your body, and that if no one safeguarded it with "Bless You" then demons and other evil spirits could take it and take over part of you, yawning comes into this, but that's a different story, anyways, have you noticed, a lot of times, if someone says "Bless You" before you sneeze, you don't sneeze?

(the yawning is that the part of your sould either re-entered your body, or, the holy spirit walked or someone walked over your future grave. both different superstitions.)

It was believed that sneezing was caused by demons trying to take your soul. So saying bless you saved it and put it back in your body.
