is it just me or does it suck to water your lawn when you really cant be bothered..?

Yes it sucked until I bought a traveling sprinkler. Now all I do is lay out the hose and the sprinkler follows it across the lawn. You can also install underground sprinklers then they will automatically water the lawn and you never again have to do it.

I never water. I have an old house and lawn, and whatever is green in the front gets mowed just like grass. The plants there have been there long enough to have sorted themselves out - the tough survive, the weak are long gone. It is a mix of clover, grass, thickleafed grass, dandelions (gorgeous color when they bloom ALL OVER the yard), maybe some spurge, ?. It's fairly shady, but always green. That said, central Ohio tends to get some summer rain.

Wish the back yard was better though - Canadian thistles over at least a fifth. I'm pulling and winning but it's a multi year project.

Depending on where you live (this won't work in Arizona . . .), you can avoid some of your watering by letting the grass grow longer (about six inches or so). When droughts do come, the plants will have more reserves to stay green without help. If you don't like grass that long, there are plenty of irrigation systems you can use. Just remember, you should never cut more than 1/3 off at a time (if it's three inches, you should only cut it down to two).

I installed a poor-mans sprinkler system. $20 for the timer, $5 for the hose, $5 for the sprinkler head. I installed the sprinkler (pulse variety) at the corner of my flowerbed where it could reach the most yard. Put the timer on the spigot. Then ran a hose from the spigot, through the flowerbed to the sprinkler. Buried the hose in mulch and now the timer runs the sprinkler every morning at 6am... I think the whole installation took 15 minutes.

Not only is it time consuming but most of the time you apply too much water or too little to your lawn, and then you apply at the wrong times that can even damage your lawn. Why not look at installing an irrigation system. But please get a pro to do it otherwise you could make matters worse. Even if it is just a small garden, i have seen the results and its not pretty. If you don't want to water you lawn then the grass will die. Why not install a sprinkler system that way and have a timer on it so you won't have to be bothered.

I think large lawns are overrated! In addition to my flower beds, I only water the lawn in a wide swath directly adjacent to my house. This does contribute to keeping the area cooler during hot spells. I let nature take care of the rest of my property. The grass will go dormant during droughts and revive when it rains. Plus every year I put in a little bit more drought tolerant plants. I think overall it's better for the ecology and it's more attractive.

I wish we were able to use a hose

we are short of water because our government has 1600 new people coming in every fortnight & they never raised the dam walls etc so we can't cope water wise

so now we can only use buckets to water & at the beginning of next month that is being cut down to 3 days a week at set times
