Why do "news anchors" like Geraldo Rivera insist on using scare tactics to gain viewership?

And does it actually work?

I can't believe you actually referred to Geraldo Rivera as a "news anchor!"

Because TV is targeted toward a twelve-year-old mind. Of course 'sensationalism' works. All you have to do is put the fear of God into someone, and they'll believe anything! -RKO-

US news is VERY sensational...and it does pull viewers. Notice news adverts always consist of murders and war......
