The link below will lead to an archive of do-it-yourself car maintenance articles on the Honda website.

So far as the price of an oil filter, it depends. Price varies depending on quality, and even on how popular the brand happens to be. I usually only pay 5 to 8 dollars US for my filters, though.

Adding new oil without changing out the old isn't bad, exactly. It will even prevent catastrophic failure like your engine seizing up if there is a small oil leak and your car is running low.

The heat from your engine will cause the oil to break down, however. That, along with minute metal shavings and other dirt like carbon deposits, eventually build up in the oil. This causes your oil to become thick and to form a paste. This thickening oil will cause friction and increased wear, reducing your mileage and increasing the chance of needing a major repair due to something wearing out.

Have your oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It is the cheapest way to extend the life of your car and increase gas mileage. This saves you money in the long run.

    1. Keep your oil level at the right amount -- don't drive with no oil.

    2. Get oil changes every 3k miles if you can -- if you don't, you might need a tow truck and a new engine.

    (1) remove drain plug and drain the old oil.

    (2) replace the drain plug.

    (3) remove and replace the oil filter.

    (4) dump in the new oil.

This procedure takes almost as much skill as replacing your floor mats...
