    State With Longest Name

  • 1 decade ago

If you are not talking about a technicality, then I would have to say that the "District of Columbia," where the city of Washington (the capital city for our natioh's Capitol building) is, has the longest name of "any other state" (with 18 letters).

However, Washington, D.C. is technically neither a state, nor part of a state. The 23rd Amendment to the Constitution did provide a right for D.C. residents to vote in Presidential elections in 1964. And, in 1973, the "District of Columbia Home Rule Act" was passed by Congress, which gave D.C. voters the right to elect a mayor and council. But, attempts to grant statehood, though proposed several times, has never been enacted.

See this site, and the related sites indicated on it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_...

So, if you are excluding Washington, D.C. (which Marine Girl indicated in her answer), then the longest U.S. state would appear to be Massachusetts (which Susan S. indicated in her answer.)

PS: That is, UNLESS the "Providence Plantations" that JT educator tacked on behind his "Rhode Island" answer is an accurate "official name" of that state...???

More than a dozen? I think Mississipi is 12... New Hampshire also. Other than that I can't think of any more!
