Lord, help me to understand that nothing is going to happen to me today that You and I together cannot handle.

  • Why would the switch to my living room ceiling fan cause my porch light to come on at night?

There is a switchplate by my front door that has three switches. The left one controls the celing light in my living room. The middle one controls the ceiling fan in my living room (in a separate area). The right one controls the outside porch light, which is a "motion-detector" type of light. (When switched on at night, the light comes on if there is motion around it; otherwise, it stays off.) I keep the porch-light switch "on" at all times so it will go into its night mode at dusk.

Recently, I have found that, sometimes at night, when I turn off the ceiling fan to go to bed, the porch light will come on, as if it has detected some motion. ??? I do not understand why, or how, it is doing this -- and it doesn't do it all the time.

Can someone knowledgeable in these things let me know what might possibly be the problem, and how I would fix it if it is a big problem, or whether I can just pretend it isn't happening and not worry about it???

  • What happens to "quarantined" items if/when you uninstall an anti-virus program?

I have an old, remanufactured computer, running a Microsoft Windows 2000 O.S. (5.0, service pack 4, build 2195) with Intel Pentium III. (Copied all this from places I found -- no idea what it all means. Figured y'all would need this to form an answer.) Someone once told me it's a "56-k" (again, no idea). (It's a dial-up system!!!)

I have a Norton Antivirus 2004 program that got a glitch. (Auto Protect off, E-mail scanning error). Went through all the suggested "fixes" to try and get rid of the glitch. I am down to the final suggestion of "un-installing and re-installing" the program.

Decided I would "upgrade" and found that my system would not accept any upgrades beyond the 2006 version. I bought that one and want to install it once I un-install the 2004 one.

But, I am leary of the un-install. What will happen to the quarantined items that are currently there? Will they disappear with the 2004 version, or be put back on my system as the 2004 is un-installed?

    Help?

  • Is it true that anyone driving OUT of New Jersey has to pay a toll?

A friend of mine recently told me that anyone driving out of New Jersey -- going anywhere else -- has to pay a toll (of something like $2.00 or more, depending on what road you are driving when you exit New Jersey.)

I live in Houston, TX and am familiar with toll roads (Beltway 8 for one); but, I had not heard of that about New Jersey... I asked my friend if anyone had to pay a toll to ENTER New Jersey and was told, "No, only those leaving that state."

Can somebody familiar with this confirm what my friend said as being true? Or, was that just a "tall tale"?

  • If you are "blocked" by someone, are you prevented from seeing their avatar?

This has been bugging me for awhile now. In reading questions and answers on this Yahoo Answers site, I have found that one avatar only shows up as a white square with a red X inside a smaller box. I have right-clicked on the X and selected "show picture," but it doesn't show...???

Note: I have my computer set to prohibit adult content. Could the avatar possibly be a little bit risque?

Or, am I being blocked? It's always the same person whose avatar is not visible. (Don't want to bring unwanted notoriety to this person, but the name begins with "s," and this person appears to spend a lot of time in this Seniors Section...)

If anyone out there can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it -- I've been trying to ignore it, but it is getting the better of me! (Curiosity will kill this cat, huh?)

  • Isn't it possible to have a CD "player" but NOT a CD "burner"?

I have a remanufactured computer (Gateway, with Pentium III), somebody said it's 56K (?) It's running Windows 2000, Svce Pack 4.

It has a tray for CDs and a slot for floppy disks (3 1/2"). I have been saving files to the floppy disks (Drive A) when I want to gain space on the hard-drive (Drive C ?).

I tried once to "save" to a CD (Drive D) because they hold more stuff than the floppy. The salesman said I wouldn't be able to do it unless I had a "CD burner." I didn't know whether I did or not; but when I tried to save, nothing happened. (That's what the salesman said would happen if I did NOT have the burner.) I got a refund on the CD's.

Now, a friend of mine is trying to tell me that if I have the tray there, and can "play" a CD (I used that tray once to reinstall my printer after a glitch), then I MUST be able to "save" to a CD.

I still believe I do not have the CD-burner, but cannot convince my friend that they are two separate things.

  • How do I tell when my lawn no longer needs mowing for the winter?

Dumb question, huh? (Duh, when it stops growing.) Well I hired a lawncare guy when I moved into my house (back in May, 2007). He was coming every two weeks. In October, I got him to come every three weeks as I couldn't see an appreciable amount of growth after two weeks. October 26th was the first time he waited 3 weeks. He's due again November 16th (two weeks from now).

When he was here on 10/26/07, he mainly edged and got the leaves off the yard, although he did run the mower... I don't want to NOT have a lawncare guy if needed, but I also don't want to pay for something NOT needed; hence, my question -- how do I tell when it's okay to not worry about mowing the lawn for the winter?

(I live in the Houston, Texas area.)

Are there any lawncare professionals out there that can answer me? If services are cancelled, how does that affect our "client-customer" relationship? What's the protocol in ending services for the season?

  • Is the cold weather killing my "weed patch," or have I been infested with bugs?

When I bought my house, it came with a built-in "weed patch" in the back yard corner that the previous owners had failed to care for. (Was supposed to be either a vegetable or flower garden, cannot tell which.) I have been meaning to take care of that, but other things kept coming up with more priority. I figured it would be okay to leave it "festering" there until I could get to it.

A couple of days ago, I noticed that all the grass is now dead or dying. (It had gotten to about two-to-three feet tall.) Other plants there seem to be okay...

We have had a cold front hit the Houston, Texas area, and I haven't had to run my air conditioner for a couple of weeks now. Is the cold weather what's affecting the grass? Or, have I been infested with some type of "bugs" ?

I just wondered if I should move the "weed patch" up in priority at this time, or if it's still okay to let it go until later -- like when it's warm again!

    Note: first-time homeowner, clueless.

  • Do you remember the metal ice trays with the handles?

This Seniors' section got me to reminiscing about "the old days," and I happened to think about the old types of metal ice trays that had a handle to pull to get the ice out. I remember that you had to run water over the bottom to loosen the ice before you pulled the handle; else the ice would come out in cracks and pieces.

I did a search on the Web and came across these items for sale in ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/LOT-OF-6-VINTAGE-METAL-ICE-TRA...

These are what I remember having. (I won't place a bid, though, because the site says it will cost $10.00 to ship them -- and the opening bid is only $0.99! Duh!)

I had thought about trying to find some, as it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to twist those plastic trays to pop out the ice -- and THEY also seem to break the ice lately. Maybe my water is too hard?

Has anybody seen any vintage ice trays around?

  • Are you able to adjust an outside motion-detector light (on the front porch) so that it will stay on?

My house has a motion-detector light on the front porch, which is driving me crazy. Firstly, because I want it to stay on all the time at various times -- like when I am expecting somebody and want to have a light on for them; secondly, because it comes on at odd times of the night when nothing is there -- wind, maybe?!? And, thirdly, sometimes I cannot get it to come on when I exit my front door to walk next door to my ailing neighbor (have to wave my hand all over the place, and even hit it a couple of times to get it to come on).

Is there -- or shouldn't there be -- a way to adjust this light to stay on all the time when I turn it on? Or, at least stay on longer periods of time?

(I DID at least find out WHERE the motion-detector part of it is located -- It's a little area at the bottom front of the light socket.)

Anybody have these types of porch light? Can you adjust them? How?

  • How would one tactfully approach the life partner of a dear friend who has the HIV virus, possibly AIDS?

I discovered a few years ago that a dear friend of mine, in another state, had contracted the HIV virus. No confirmation was given as to whether it had progressed to AIDS, and I did not ask what I considered personal questions. I believed that my friend would elaborate if/when he chose to, and continued to "be there" by phone if/whenever he called. He would call me and detail the laboratory studies, medications, physicians, and complications he was having as a result of all that.

I am unable to visit him, but correspond by e-mail and wait for his calls. He hasn't called in a few months now. HIs life-partner has called, saying my friend is "feeling better, gaining weight, eating better, etc..." but always states that my friend is "not up to speaking" to me.

This may sound cruel, but I believe the life-partner is waiting for my friend to die, and may not be telling me the truth. Do I still not "but in" where not wanted? I do not want to lose touch...Or have I already?

  • Is the term "straight" a no-no to gays and lesbians?

I have a couple of gay friends. When they lived here, we went out a lot and I always had a lot of fun with them. (So much so that one night I peed my pants laughing! But that's another story.)

They moved out of state years ago, and I miss their company.

I remember that they hated to use the term "straight" when giving directions. If I would say something like, "You go straight at the stop sign and turn right at the second light," I would be "corrected" by one of them who would say, "Nope. You go FORWARD at the stop sign and turn right at the second light." Nothing was ever "straight ahead." It was always "forward and onward" or something like that.

Was this just some quirky nature of my friends, or do a lot of the gays and lesbians have this same idiosyncrasy?

  • What is the sentence in the English language that can be spoken but never written properly?

I was asked that one time and worried with it for awhile. When I was given the answer (finally!), I felt like slapping my head for my ignorance.

Do any of you know the answer? I'll tell you in a little while. But bear in mind, it won't be written properly because it's impossible to do so...

  • Brake light flashes & goes off; Rear ABS light stays on until I turn engine off and back on?

1993 Ford Aerostar V6 Extended minivan. Couple of months ago weird things started happening to brake warning lights on dash. In a.m., (cold engine), when first driving, the red brake light will flash on then off; then the yellow Rear ABS light comes on and stays on. If/when I turn engine off and restart, all goes away. Was thinking electrical problem? But, now this is happening more frequently. Example: after turning engine off and back on, the lights will do the same thing for a second time. Third time of engine off/on, lights don't do it. (Just had auto in shop for power steering pump replacement & didn't think to ask mechanic about brake lights. But, I DID ask the mechanic to check all fluid levels: brake, oil, transmission, radiator. He said all was fine with them.) My brakes work, car stops. Is it just electrical? What is the "testing" I've been reading about in the answers about ABS? Should I be concerned?

  • Why do "deleted" questions remain on tne Answer's "Open" list?

The volume of "open" questions is getting so large! I reversed the date order so that the oldest questions appear first. I then looked for some questions with "0" as the number of answers, to try to clear them out. When I click on them, a comment pops up saying that "this question has been deleted as the time expired and nobody answered the question," or words to that effect. (There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of questions that have exceeded the time limit for answers, which are clogging up the "Open" section!)

If the question has been deleted (by the Answer Staff, presumably), then why is it not REMOVED FROM THE OPEN QUESTIONS?!?

Answer staff, it seems to me that you could create a separate section for "deleted questions" like you have for "Resolved" and "Vote" questions... ???

  • Does anyone know of, and/or where it can be found, a topical medical agent called Redpoint?

When I searched the Web for this, it kept coming up with rock climbing stuff and other non-medical sites. The Redpoint I am looking for is something you rub on for pain relief. I don't know whether it is a Prescription-only drug, or if it is an OTC item, but apparently is for relief of pain for either fibroymalgia or bursitis (or maybe even headaches!?!). Are there any medical transcriptionists out there who are familiar with this "Redpoint" term and where to find the product? Thanks in advance for any help on this subject!
