DUH! What do you think a sponsored link is. They are advertising. Websites pay big money to have their website at the top of the page.
Google is a huge corporation. A corporations number job is to provide profit to it's stockholders! As a stockholder, let's hope Google "cheats" even more as you say and makes even more money!
