Viet Anh Hotel?
Has anyone stayed at the Viet Anh Hotel on Ma May Street, old quarter in Hanoi? Wondering what it is like and would you recommend staying there. Cheers

Anything in the old quarter is going to be old and small, almost all the hotels there are adequate. There are some newer ones but still small. Expect to pay around $10 - $20US per night at most places. Pick one before you get in the taxi or he will suggest a hotel that will cost you $30 - $40US minimum. They want to make a buck too. You're gonna love the city and the Halong Bay trip will be very touristy but AWESOME scenery. Take the three day tour with the overnight stay around $25US for the lot.
I strongly suggest you buy the Lonely Planet Guide for Vietnam. Their "where to stay and what to do" are spot on.

Make sure when you get answers to Old Quarter hotel questions they are very recent. the old quarter changes so quickly based on local competition which can be ruthless, and tourism dollars. Find a travel forum like Thorn tree and ask or scroll recent stays in the area. Some hotels use the same names as others once they become popular as to siphon off unsuspecting customers who only heard the name. If you have an issue make sure you get all prices and accommodation promises up front in old quarter hotels. be ready to walk as there are touts everywhere who will rush you off to a competitor.
