How are the symptoms of strep throat different than those of a bad cold or the flu?

Strep is usually locally painful-throat. The cold and the flu are caused by viruses and tend to hurt all over with fever. For most, a cold and the flu are self-limiting. But, strep can last for awhile and have serious complications if left untreated. Untreated strep can turn into bacterial endocarditus where your heart valves get infected. You really don't want your heart valves infected-they are kind of important ya know. If you think you may have strep you need to go to the doc and get some antibiotics. It's easy to treat though.

Generally, you will have visible spots of white pus on your tonsils and the back of your throat if you have strep. You will also feel much more ill than if you had a regular cold or flu. You must take antibiotics to prevent a systemic infection and damage to your heart valves.
