I did not see them on Oprah, but I agree with them and admire their courage for speaking their minds even if it cost them record sales, not to mention the death threats. I guess some yahoos don't believe in the freedoms their country was founded on, and that about 24,000 Americans died for in the Revolutiuonary war.

Well its a complex thing.
A lot of the soldiers were from the South where the Chicks brought in massive income and fans. I live 40 minutes outside of Nashville and there was 100 foot billboard with the girls pic on it. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of their songs, and they were just loved here. People were emotional about the war and that was just tension to start with. It did start with the remarks about Bush, days later the Chicks apologized, then took it back later.
What really made people in Nashville mad were the comments and the ping pong game of sorry/not sorry, love country music/hate it game they played. They just kept making the whole thing worse by saying really silly things. One of the latest was a slam about the show called the View.
I think people were harsh on them, but i also think the statement about Bush was not thought through and just the spur of the moment thing that was probably intended more as a joke than a statement. She said herself on Oprah that it was really was a joke, but that really makes it worse. It wasn't a thing to take lightly.
She had the right to do anything she wanted, but I don't think she took time to think that a lot of mothers who bought the CDs over the years were going through a rough period. That the last thing they needed was doubt outside of thier own minds. When you think about music, you expect songs of protest about war. In this case the war inspired a comment, and along the way the Chicks produced the song "Not ready to make nice." a song inspired by the hate they recieved over the years. I would like to think they could have sung a Buffalo Springfield song that day instead of making a flat comment but again its thier right.
I don't see them as heros or saying what anybody was thinking because to look at them in the interview it didn't seem like they were all together about the comment. I think the lead singer went out on her own and the friendship she has with her bandmates got tugged along.
America should not have treated them so bad, but I know even though I didn't care one way or another at the time all this happened, it has affected me now.
I liked the chicks music because it was good. I really wanted to like the latest album but I couldn't get passed all the glum resentment and statements it made. They have just kept drawing attention to that one statement and the events that followed so much, that I can't handle it anymore.
I was suprised to see them not only on Oprah, but on Ellen, Good Morning America, and VH-1. Each time telling the same story. Now there is a documentary coming.
The Dixie Chicks just are not about the music right now. Its really a shame because they are very talented. I hope they get over this event and move on.

Yes. They were just on there to push their new movie. Celebrities generally only appear on TV talk shows to promote movies, albums, books, etc. If they made those controversial comments today I don't think it what cause nearly as much uproar. I thinks it's hypocritical that people got so upset and called them "un-American" because the great thing about America is the right to free speech and the freedom to openly criticize the government. The people who said they should just shut up are the ones who are un-American. I think it also has to do with the type of music they play. Country music appeals more to older, more conservative people. If they were a hard rock/heavy metal band, or if they were men, we wouldn't have had this big controversy.

I love the Dixie Chicks and I still think
they are being unfairly treated by the redneck mentality. I mean after all this is America and we aren't supposed to be hung out to dry for expressing an opinion. It's really hard to respect a political "leader" who can't talk or spell and looks just like Alfred E. Newman.
They were awesome on Oprah today - I hope their tour sells out and people forget about the political "B.S."!!!!!!

First let me say that I love the Chicks and have all of their CD's ,including their newest one, but I really thought they were out of line when they were in the UK.
I do not feel that entertainment and political ideals should be mixed. People were there to enjoy music, they were not attending a political rally. Everyone is entitled to state and have their opinions but lets keep them in their proper place.
BUT, America forget it, enjoy the chicks for the great entertainers that they are!!!!

She ( Natalie Maines ) made the mistake of saying something she shouldn't have in the prescence of her fan base, which is predominantly a bunch of rednecks. She nor anyone else shoulda been surprised at the resulting outrage. The thing that bothers me is that country fans have held a grudge this long. It's time to forgive and forget.

yes, she can be equate with the old anti-war people of the 60's who were also persecuted. Just because one may not agree with them doesn't mean they don't have the right to express their opinions

President Bush never cared what the Chicks said about him, so I don't see why America got so livid and offended by it, were they not just exercising their freedom of speech? Bush was even quoted as saying that he is a big fan of their music.. WTF America????

I don't like them. They're brats. They had one good song, Wide Open Spaces.
