Ignore the two answers above as they are both BS. NTSC and PAL/SECAM are both broadcast systems for different parts of the world. All TV equipment sold in north america and some other countries conform to the NTSC standard, european countries mostly support PAL/SECAM. They are not compatible with each other. I used to work as a product manager for a consumer electronics company, I would get fired fast if I didn't even know this basic knowledge.

NTSC stands for National Television System Committee (most american tv sets). PAL stands for Phase Alternation Line (more European or world market. Many PC programs use this for making movies but NTSC for watching TV). ATSC stands for Advanced Television Systems Committee... LOL ok not much help huh?

In is nutshell, if in the USA & you want to watch TV & are given the option, chose NTSC. If you are making video clips & things then PAL is the most used.
