Anxiety/Panic Attack/Disorder, or something else?
I usually get chest pain and it switches from one side of my chest to the other each time I get it. The pain is stabbing and sharp like someone is sticking a knife in me and twisting it, it lasts for about 30 seconds, and sometimes less if I lay flat on my back. I can't breathe in deep so I have to take small, short breaths so it doesn't hurt. Sometimes I can be in a comfortable setting and still get it. My eldest brother has the same problem and he was told it was Anxiety.
Last night I had an episode again, but this time it lasted about 20 minutes or more. The pain was even more severe than it usually was. I tried laying on my back but it didn't help at all. I was experiencing shaking with it as if I were cold, but I was not cold. I've had the shaking before but it's never been together with the chest pain. I've also had both the shaking and chest pain ever since I was 12 or so (21 now). Could someone give me some insight as to what it really is and anything I can do about it?
I hate the doctors so that's why I refuse to go, in case anyone asks.
To Papever...It's not my heart. I had this checked out when I was 15 and they couldn't find anything. As I said it goes from one side to the next. I have no problem with my left arm and it's never just located on my left side where my heart is. And besides...what are the chances I have the same exact so-called "heart problem" as my brother even though his was diagnosed as Anxiety...?

A Panic Attack usually includes four or more of the following. The symptoms develop rapidly and reach their peak in 10 minutes or less. A Panic Attack can be related to an anxiety disorder.
1. palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
2. sweating
3. trembling or shaking
4. sensations of shortness of breath
5. feeling of choking
6. chest pain or discomfort
7. nausea or abdominal distress
8. feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
9. derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself
10 fear of losing control or going crazy
11. fear of dying
12. parathesis (numbness or tingling sensations)
13. chills or hot flushes
Definitely sounds like your symptoms could be related to an anxiety disorder. It would be a good idea to see a general physician to rule out other possibilities and then go see a counselor.

Well you can hate doctors all you want to but until you go to one. You will never know what your problem is. Since you seem to respect the opinion of all us Yahooligans more than you do a licensed, trained physician. Take OUR advise and OUR referral and go to the damn Doctor.
In dealing with the heart...you really have no other option. It may very well be a blocked artery, a murmur, a small hole in your heart, anything? You could talk all day here and someone might have some insight, but anything they ever had to say either way if it appeased what you want to hear or not isn't going to actually be able to tell you if there is actually something wrong with your ticker.
Go have a stress test!

i tell you something that might help. try taking either RELECORE or ST. JOHN WART. they help with the nerves. also take malanta or peptobismol. anxiety attacks cause gas to build up in the chest causing pain and more anxiety because you think you are having a heart attack! This is due to the excess gas that builds up when under stress. Try counting very slowly. It seems to help me. You say it feels better if you lay on your stomach, that sounds like gastritis, take something like I said and it should give you some relief. hope this helps. i also suffer from this problem for many years. But i do go to doctor.

It is best to analyse which situations make you go into anxiety stae.Is it in open places, infront of people etc?
Then from there is the point of confrontation with the reality until it becomes a familial and relaxing point.Little by little you can overcome the anxiety with also positive outlook towards life.Yoga is also another form of relieving.Found about a Yoga instructor.

You have to overcome your fear of consulting the doctor. Your problem is made worse by your own fear. Ask your friends if they know of any understanding doctors around, go for those who are known to be good listeners, who tolerate alternative medicine and who believe in God. Personally i dislike seeing doctors myself but it's better than worrying to death. So far, most of the doctors i consulted are reasonable, one even let me cry for 10 mins before i left her room. I was so stressed up then, more of mental pressure than physical, and the crying gave me so much relieve.

Yes, it sounds like severe anxiety. Stress, whether self-induced or otherwise is usually the cause...
Eliminate that, see if it helps and take a yoga class.

You should really go to the doctor. If you don't like them, take a friend with you for support.

try to tell yourself that it will pass and you will be ok. If you reconize the symtoms you can get a head start on it
