You would have to buy all the land in the state, which would not be possible at any price because there's no way you could get everyone to sell, not to mention there are government lands and/or nature preserves, which you just can't buy. Also, you can't buy the turnpike, for another example. Even if you owned all the land in the state as your private property, you still would have to follow state and federal laws the same way that you have to follow them in your house or your yard. Unless you also evicted every person in delaware or whereever, your tenants would still be voting in elections, and the lawmakers would probably find some way to prevent you from too badly abusing your power. Finally, you couldn't just prevent people from using roads or anything, because if the roads have a longstanding existence, a judge will grant easments for common passage along them. Also, you can't secede from the US, even if you did magically buy all the land and evict every resident. For further info on America's position on secession, see the US Civil War.

There are no laws stating that a person can own only so much land. With enough money... you could in theory purchase all of the land in a state, however, you would have to convince people, corporations, and the government who own the land to sell it to you!
All that you would have is the land! You would have no "government" power.
You are right, there is no way a single person or corporation could purchase an entire state.
He is also right due to the fact that in theory there isn't any laws to keep you from doing it!

You could by a lot of land and buildings but not state property or federal installations, that is held in perpetuity by the state government by statute and the state and federal constitutions.
Even a state like Rhode Island which isn't even as big as a lot of western state's counties (only about 2,000 square miles) would cost trillions of dollars to buy the privately owned portions.

LOL!!! I think your fighting an uphill battle but ask him how he plans to buy the government owned land. Not to mention that if you want to do as you please you would have to claim sovereignty and then the US Military would get involved. Good luck against them.
But assume all the land is for sale and you bought it all you would still be under the US laws and guidelines so you could never do as you please in the US or any other country for that matter.
Which brings us back to sovereignty.
Try a search for declaring yourself as a sovereign nation.

People like Ted Turner are buying up large amounts of land in western states for God knows what purpose.. His purchases have ruined the life of many multigenerational farmers and ranchers. By purchasing these large amounts of land, land prices have been inflated, property taxes went up as the result. Many ranchers are having a hard time of it.

maximum US states are an same for cartridge lengthy guns, shotguns & rifles. some which incorporates California have regulations on what type of firearm might want to be bought. Illinois makes each and every firearm proprietor must have a FOID card by technique of regulation. All initial firearms revenues (from save to proprietor) needs to have a Federal type crammed out it really is to be save by technique of the seller for 20 yrs and pass an NICS (nationwide instantaneous verify equipment) heritage verify. it really is achieved over the phone by technique of the seller. Black powder muzzle loading rifle, shotgun and handguns might want to be bought without paper artwork and NICS verify. they is also dropped at your abode. i'm in Indiana myself. the following inner most firearm revenues human being to human being are criminal the following no more effective place of work artwork or NICS verify. even as I have an Indiana License to carry a Handgun, i do not want it to purchase a handgun. No registration of firearm the following. No regulation putting ahead we'd want to apply gun locks or safes to save firearms. There are firearms that are regulated more effective, like finished computerized or elect fireplace firearms, short barreled rifles, sawed of shotguns etc. Silencer for firearms are also grouped into this class. They fall less than more effective Federal guidelines and require registration and taxes besides as accessible inspection each and every so typically. some states do not enable them, in spite of the indisputable fact that the final public do. there is also a adverse gadget class for some shotguns.

You would have to individually purchase every piece of land from its owner, including all state-owned and U.S.-owned lands. No land owner would be obligated to sell you anything if he didn't want to. And I very much doubt that our government would be willing to sell most of the state properties.
