Why do conservative Christians think we should become a religious state?

I am a Christian. My beliefs are just that - MINE. I have NO RIGHT to enforce my beliefs on anyone else. I do what I am suppose to do - witness. God gave free will, and those who don't believe are suppose to suffer the consequences. If someone gets an abortion, decides not to believe, decides to have a homosexual lifestyle, or anything else that is "un-Christian-like", that is between God and the person. Have you forgotten the Old Testament? Prophets told Israel to repent. If they refused, then GOD DEALT WITH IT. Have you made decisions to become GOD and not the prophets?

Update:

CINNER: Why are conservative Christians in an uproar over homosexuality, stem cell research, and abortion? Why do I hear that conservative Christians want to make it LAW? Isn't that forcing someone to live how YOU as a Christian want to live?

Update 2:

TIMER: Religion is not bad. Religion is what it is, and just like everything else, it can be used in a bad way in the wrong hands (Muslim fanatics and Jerry Falwell).

Update 3:

NED B: Conservative Christians have been in control and influenced bush over the past 6 years. DO YOU THINK WE HAVE GOTTEN BETTER???

They say things like "we are moving toward a secular society," "'They' (whoever "they" are) want to take 'in God we trust' from our money" and "take 'under God' " from the pledge of allegiance. I don't know where the disconnect occurred that they do not know their own history. Our government was formed to be a secular government. This is explicit in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Pledge was written in 1892, by a man named Richard Bellamy, and went as follows "I pledge allegiance to the flag and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." THAT'S IT! "Under God" was not added until 1954 by Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization. "In God we trust" was not added to money until 1864, almost 100 yrs after our country was formed. Separation of church and state is one of the main principles our country was founded on, and it's deplorable that many would "overlook" this to gain power and control.

Somewhere out there in the realm of human behavior there is a line that defines whether or not you want to control the world around you. I don't claim to know what the cause of peoples need for power and control over others is. The conseravitive Christian churches seem to be a magnet for control thinking.

This behavior is not strictly the sole privy of conservative Christians. There are many examples of groups on the left whose behavior exemplifies the need for control. If you look at the political spectrum as having four quadrants rather than just right and left, then you start to see why there seems to be so much chaos in political thinking today. Not only do you have right and left but up and down represents authoritarian and passive thought.

Christians have the power of organization on their side. Churches are social centers perfect for disseminating information much like the labor unions of days gone by.

The world is full of people that seem to need to control their worlds. It looks like a lot of hard useless work to me. Like you, I believe that each of us will ultimately have to account for our choices in life. What anyone else has to say about it will be meaningless in the end. Will your cup be full or empty?

The power of religion is such that some people are easily controlled by it--look at the Muslims, look at the Amish. People who live in that tight little framework have all their questions answered, have a rule-book or head honcho to interpret law to them. Wouldn't it be lovely if everybody had to conform to a certain religion? Everything would be black and white, no grey areas. So a lot of Christians feel so righteous and so positive that only THEY are the ones who know just how to live, that they want to make sure everyone else lives the same. they feel insecure unless they feel that everyone believes as they do.,

Because they've been brainwashed by the Bible. Living your entire life according to the bible is like living according according to the Harry Potter series...they're both equally fictional to me. "Jesus said this" and "Peter said this"...I wanna hear the f--king transcripts, okay? Just let me hear the tapes. Anybody can say this happened and that happened...convienently two or three thousand years ago before it could actually be documented. Sorry, folks, I've never been one to take some books' word for anything...it's just a book to me. I refuse to read it just like I refuse to read Harry Potter: I don't read fantasy novels. I'm too much of a realist. You say Conservative Christian, I say cult.

Religion and Political parties DON'T MIX. Republicans use conservative Christians (Take their money to win and break promises)

Conservative DOES NOT equal a saint. Both political parties are full of Satan's lapdogs. Power lusting fools like our President are so "fake" and don't give a @#$ about us.

May God have mercy apon us all.

Christians bizarre obsession with homosexuality has me mystified. Personally I think it's dangerous what they are doing mixing religion and politics. The last time Christians controlled this country they executed people for Witchcraft based on spectral sight as evidence. BTW homosexuality is not a lifestyle it's my life. I personally wish everyone would just leave us alone and stop using us to get re-elected. I don't need you, your God, or your Jesus to tell me what to do or who to love. I'd like all you religious nut cases to stay the **** out of my life. I don't bother you and you don't bother me.

" I have NO RIGHT to enforce my beliefs on anyone else ........"

Okay. So you believe in anarchy.

Government is ALWAYS about enforcing someone's beliefs against someone else. It is ALWAYS about that. Government has laws against murder, theft, arson, fraud, and there are countless laws regulating how to conduct business -- such as "labor protections." There are laws against cruelty to animals and laws protecting the environment. All of those laws involve forcing one group's beliefs upon another. All of them.

When people say things such as what you said, I know RIGHT OFF THE BAT that they DON'T MEAN WHAT THEY'VE SAID. I know that you speak euphamistically. You are really addressing abortion and homosexuality. (And, as a gay man, I've gotta say that I have virtually no respect for people who say "decides to have a homosexual lifestyle." You'll really win a lot of gay friends with that one.) But you are addressing those issues at WAY TOO HIGH A LEVEL OF GENERALITY.

Say what you mean, man. Don't say things that no one will take seriously.

Why do you think this to be fact? It will never happen. Church attendance is down everywhere. Do you think this country would be better off with no religion at all? Study your history of past civializations and see what caused their downfall. Why does the far left want this country to become a socialist state? Do you not think that it would be easier for this country to become a socialist state than a religious one? Maybe you want the government to control everything for you. Sorry, not me.

  • I totally agree with your premise, in fact let me take it one step further.....

My question has always been, If Christians are so convinced that their Lord Jesus will save them from the destruction of the world......

Why don't they just get out of the way, and let US, the non-believers ruin it the way they say we will?

Won't they get to Heaven that much faster?

Are they having a Crisis of Faith, or being Hypocritical?

No one thinks we should become a religious state. But when people go around changing the constitution and the way our history has been for the longest time towards secular progressive ways then we get aggravated. When people try to eliminate the words "In god we trust" on our money, or "one nation under god" in our pledge of allegiance, or numerous other examples, it's really unAmerican. This is a part of American history that people are trying to eliminate!
