Should it scare me that my 16 year old son has no fear?

He has always been like this but last year he almost died due to an infection after surgery for a ruptured appendix and spent a week in ICU on a resperator and 3 weeks more in the hospital plus 3 months at home recovering and now he is very fearless. He is not reckless or taking chances but he literally has no fear now of dieing or being hurt. He is a happy kid and truly enjoys life but the fearless thing worry's me.

This is a difficult one. I don't have children, but if he was my son I would be worried like hell.

On he other hand I would be proud that my son is truly enjoying life!

A few days ago I watched this documentary about stuntmen and there was this young kid and his mother. He did all kind of things like jumping over trains with his motorbike. You could see hat she was worried and proud on the same time. She gave him the opportunity to do what he liked best, she realised that this is what he wanted the most.

    Difficult subject.

You say that he is not being reckless, that's very good, and because he is not afraid he must have learned very well how to fall and how to take care of himself. That he is not afraid to die is also not a bad thing, I see it more as courageous.

Then again, like I said, I can imagine your worries!

Being somewhat fearless is a quality of being young and 16. As you say, he's not reckless or taking chances, so he is intelligent. Actually, not being aware of one's mortality is a gift of the young. Maybe he faced his fears of it while he was so sick and has come to terms with it- something many mature people have yet to master. I myself have shared his lack of fear of death from the age of around 18. I went to work in an ER, and saw my share of death - and eventually I learned to face my own fears of it. As long as he isn't crazy reckless and taking chances, I'd say he has a healthy fear of everything but death, and that's not such a bad thing. Sounds like he has a pretty good idea of how precious life really is.

I have survived cancer, a near-fatal car accident, and had a miscarriage that was so serious that my surgeon wasn't sure if I would make it. I am not reckless, but I don't live with the same level of mortal fear that most midlife people have.

I am aware of life's limitations. I don't worry about death and dying. It's liberating. Your son will live a freer life. It is a gift.

This is natural, he almost died when his appendix ruptured.

He should have no fear, God is looking after your son.

Dont worry and be happy .

some ppl spend their whole lives not doing things they enjoy for fear of dying, your son is just fine, some ppl don't have the fear of dying and that is ok.

I think most teenage boys believe they are bulletproof.

It's a sign of his age more than anything else, in my opinion.
