The threat of violence should always be recorded and reported immediately. Enlist the courts and the police, but don't stop there.
You will need two bodyguards, many weapons, and the training to use them. Employ armed bodyguards to keep an eye on your kids and on you. Quickly learn a range of effective weapons from non-lethal to lethal, and prepare yourself to use them with professional training. Get counseling to learn how to deal with post-traumatic, and even lethal consequences. Given a history of violence and pure rage, and having "nothing to lose," he may very quickly escalate the situation to the level of lethal force, but for the sake of your kids and your own security, you must be prepared and committed to prevail at all costs.
Invest in a monitored home security system. Inform neighbors of the situation, especially sharpshooters. Do not run or hide as that will provoke him (the smell of fear and blood only encourages the beast), and put you in an environment with fewer friends to "support" you. The only effective reply to force is force and to violence is violence. You will have to use the minimum amount of force necessary to neutralize his threat.
If you take the more passive approach of passing all of the responsibility to the state, your ex will likely prevail, if he has half-a-brain, and the police will be at least one-step behind him for enough time to give you many serious nightmares, some of which may be realized, God forbid.

You need to go in hiding somewhere. If you don't have family or friends to trust then go to a women's shelter. Stay there until court. Be sure you have a restraining order. They rarely are useful but it would be best to have one. Then move as far away from the violent man as possible. Good luck.

stay away, and document all! keep the kids away until the court date, dont answer his calls or the door, the court will understand, better safe than sorry! I hate that you and your children are going through this.
It will all work out!
