Como estas is basically an informal way to say "how are you?" A more formal way would be "como esta usted?". If you are being asked "como estas?" by someone who is older than you, or in a higher position, you answer more formally by saying, perhaps

"Bien, gracias. Como esta usted?" Which means "I'm doing well, thank you. How are you?" Less formal is "bien, gracias. Y usted?" Very informal is "bein, gracias, y tu?"

Keep in mind that it is VERY rude to call a superior the informal version of you "tu"...say "usted" instead. (no pun intended)

    you could also say

    "bien"---I'm doing well.

    "bueno" ---OK

    "muy bien"--very well

    "estoy mal"---I'm doing poorly

"muy malo" ---I'm doing very badly

Keep in mind also that in Spanish, if you say you are feeling "ok," you will probably be asked why...to keep it short, sweet, and simple, just say "bien, y usted?"

If you have any experience in Russian, the use of Вы, and Ты for formal and informal (respectively) is the same. As is with answering "how are you?" (you will be asked why you are feeling just "ok".)

So you can say: Bien¿ y tu?-good and you Or you can say:mal ¿Y tu? In Spain its not impolite to say tu (you) but usted is a very posh word and if you said that to a neighbour or something they would probably think you're a freak so I don't think you should. Now if this person was your boss or superior it would be better to say usted

let me see if I can help you with some examples 1. ¿Dónde estás? (where are you?) answer: Estoy en mi casa (i'm at home) another way to answer: Yo estoy en mi casa (I used a personal pronoun to answer) 2. ¿De qué color es tu camisa? (what color is your shirt) answer: Mi camisa es de color amarillo (my shirt is yellow) so, I wrote you one example where you use a verb (or a personal pronoun) to answer, and the other where you use a noun to answer... but there are more ways to answer, so there is no a rule I hope this helps if you need more help just email me
