Will play-doh start to crack after I let it harden?
I wanted to use play-doh for an art project so I'd have to let it harden. I haven't played with play-doh since I was a kid so I can't remember if it cracks or not. I'd be making things like animals and caves.
Will it crack or should I just use something else like clay?
I was hoping to use play-doh because it came in so many different colors and was easier to mold than clay.

crayola makes a great clay. yes playdooh cracks.
you can also make your own using food coloring to make any color.
STEP 1: Mix 4 c. flour, 1 c. salt, some food coloring and enough water to moisten.
STEP 2: Mix the ingredients, adding water until you have the desired consistency. The clay should be stiff but still hold together when rolled into a ball.
STEP 3: Store in refrigerator to avoid spoiling until you are ready to create your own Christmas tree ornaments.
STEP 4: Cut the clay with cookie cutters or a sharp knife. Or mold it into a variety of shapes - anything from vegetables to motorcycles.
STEP 5: Dry the objects after they have been shaped by baking in the oven at 200 degrees F for about 10 minutes. They can then be painted.

play-doh is the best one to use for a school art project.
Use clay if you are planning on saving your art project for a long period of time. You can also paint the clay after it hardens.

It's not long-term, and also rodents find it attractive (mice). Depends on how long you want to keep it. For a month or so, it should be fine -- definitely worth the experiment. Keep it in a tightly sealed plastic container after it is dry to keep the pests away.
You can also make your own play-doh. I use a breadmaker, and it does a great job. Add the colors yourself, and some home-made doughs are bake-able -- look for something that is supposed to be used for Christmas ornaments, and it should be relatively long-lasting. BTW, you can add peppermint oil or other scents to home-made play-dough.

No, play-doh doesn't crack through hardening, but it will crack when you bend it. Clay is probably your best choice.

My daughter is 21 months old, and has been fiddling with Play-Doh for terribly it sluggish. She has little plastic animals that I hide in Play-Doh, and enable her attempt to wager what it quite is earlier she peels it off. I additionally wreck out the plastic cookie cutters, to boot as rubber stamps (no longer the self-inking type, however the type it quite is beneficial dip in ink - rather of dipping them in ink, we stamp the layout into the Play-Doh). We make snakes an undesirable lot. She additionally likes me to make bracelets and rings for her to placed on. She in many cases asks me to make toddlers out of the Play-Doh (I often make a tragic stick-determine style element with a head that has a tendency to fall off - yet she nevertheless likes it!), and she or he makes a mattress and a pillow and a blanket for them. in easy terms some suggestions of a few issues that would desire to activity your son in fiddling with it, rather than ingesting it! As for the scissors, i think of now's a ideal time to introduce them to him. merely shop encouraging him and showing him a thank you to do it precise. Assuming you're using little one's scissors, and not letting him run around with them, i do no longer see something too risky approximately it. it quite is unlike you're gonna hand him a pair of grownup scissors and walk away!
