I just got 2 male 8 week old chihuahuas today .. they are so small and fragile .. I'm not sure the best way

I don't know the best way to house break these little guys .. I could see teaching them to go on papers or in a sandbox .. but it won't be easy. With my Boxer .. it was easy .. but two tiny babies .. ? Any ideas how best to housebreak them .. either to go on papers, sandbox, or outside ? .. How did you do it ? .. Thanks ! :)

Update:

SORRY .. I MEANT A LITTER BOX . NOT A SAND BOX . :)

If you begin with a litter box, it will be hard to change your mind later..but litter box training works well for the little guys.. Puppy pads are confusing, and you will likely not ever get them fully trained..

If you are content to be cleaning and changing litter forever, just go for it..However, if you want them to go outside, as adults, begin now..get a soft harness, and sweaters, and take them out 5 minutes after every feeding, (4 times per day) and then between feeding, take them to pee often..they are not too tiny to leash train..As long as you stay in your own yard, or go only where other dogs don't go..

If you have a yard, put a bag on sand, in a secluded corner, as puppies love to get in sand..You can get sand at any garden supply..

If you prefer to litter train them, there are many great sites, just type in Litter train puppy..for many helpful sites.

    I used to breed Chihuahuas..

teach them right away to go outside. For the first week you have them (8weeks of age) take them out as close to every 1 hour as possible you can increase the time by 15-30 minutes the next week. By the time they are 9 months to 1 year they should be able to wait 8 hours easy. You will want to crate train these little guys to keep them from having accidents or injuring themselves when you cannot supervise them. A good place for information on housetraining and puppy care is www.veterinarypartner.com. Good luck with your pups!

I have 2 chihuahuas and one was paper trained by the breeder. I would not recommend the paper training because now if the newspaper falls on the floor he pees on it. He is now 8 years old and has not forgotten about the paper. I have never tried to litterbox train a dog so I am not sure how that would work. Mine go to the door. They are a lot sturdier and hardy than you might think. Mine are smart but stubborn.

A friend of mine gave me a used pack n play for my chihuaua. I kept her in there with a small bed, some blankets and a pp pad. You can get these at Walmart. When she would wake up, she would use the pad. I also kept one near when we had her out. Just show them where it is and they will find it. The playpen kept her safe when we were busy or at work because they are so tiny. When they outgrow the pen, keep a pad in a spot you can live with. They are very handy. Ours also goes outside, but it gets cold here and she doesn't care too much for that for long. I rely mostly on the pads. Good luck with those babies...

don't use paper, if you don't want mess in the house then don't let them go there. pups go to the loo after each meal, drink, as soon as they wake up an after play. in between times it is roughly 2 hourly. you can use a crate, dogs don't like to soil their beds so put his bed in there an feed him in there an take him out frequently. you have to watch the dog, it will sniff the floor when it wants to go or make whimper sounds.

Source(s): i have a 10 week old german shepherd an it took me 4 days to get him going outside. praise every time they get it right, ignor when its wrong or you will drive them to hide when they go an find poo behind the sofa. good luck
  • Obviously they shouldnt have and dont need as much space as a boxer pup, and they wont get anywhere on their own nearly as quick, but otherwise you should be just as consistant as you were with the boxer.

Put them outside 25mins after they get done eatting... put them near a tree.. or bush and leave them out there for about 10mins.... until they go... and dont let them play out there or esle they will think its play time every time they go out there... and bring them in as soon as they are done... and always tell them before going outside... "gotta go out" and do that every time and they will get it... after awhile they have to go outside to use the bathroom
