the Mil Spec from Springfield Armory will probably come in less than your price range, and you can fix it up or add options.

The Taurus PT1911 looks like a fine gun that is in your price range. What makes it look special is that it has all the bells and whistles that you normally find on $1200 guns. Also, I believe the American Rifleman said that the gun was very accurate and performed flawlessly.

I like the Para-Ordinance line of .45's. I have had nothing but good luck with them for over 10 years.
