    Long before it did in the Ukraine or Soviet Union, I can tell you that! I recall it made the news in North America pretty much as soon as it happened. I was ten, and I clearly remember seeing it on the news.

    Very soon after It happened because the Soviet Union(now Russian Federation) could censor news about, but not hide the accident from the west. Foreign doctors were allowed to visit to help the contaminated later on.

    Censorship. They have a "state" television station run by a government official.
